Hello,
Does anyone know about the flights over Russia/China having to have positions reports as if they were in a Oceanic area is this true and if so which areas do it?
I got thinking after this video i seen….its a Alitalia MD-11 flying to Honk Kong and while over Russia/China, what I can make out it sounds like they are doing position reports, any infomation on this would be great.

I’ve done it about 9 or 10 times since it started. It’s too long a trip for my liking (9 days).

I have just landed 5 hours ago from a 12 hour return from Tokyo so I’m probably fairly well qualified to nswer your question! My flight involved approximately 8 hours in Russian airspace, all of which these days is conducted via VHF communication. Most of the western parts of Russia (and the first few hundred miles past Vladivostok heading westbound) are conducted with radar coverage however the middle part is still largely procedural with position reporting conducted in the same way as you would if you were non-CPDLC mid atlantic on HF or in Africa.
Do you ever get the Sydney run???

I’m no expert on ATC in those countries, but I’d imagine there are vast swathes of airspace that have no radar or VHF cover, so are treated exactly the same as oceanic airspace; position reports via HF.
