LHR 18/6

Hi,

Made an unexpected visit down to Greenwich park which is a fairly decent spot to watch heavies banking in to line up – didn’t take the camera 🙁
I noticed a few peculiarities which it would be appreciated if somebody could clear up:

– A bi-plane was seen heading in to land, any ideas on type, reason etc…
– I saw a Fokker 50, is this likely to be of KLM, I only saw the under side, and is it still feasible to operate such an aircraft to LHR
– Finally I saw an aircraft (wow 😀 ), a B747, which appeared to have a Cathay tail and a redish special scheme to the front, any ideas who this was or pics of the cathay special (if it was cathay),

Cheers,

Wozza

It had two engines and was of relatively large size for a biplane – so at a guess a DH Rapide, however the airplane I had little detail on was the size and make-up of the Tiger Moth,

Wozza

There you go then its a DH Rapide. you sure a Tiger moth not a Boeing Stearman ST75 😀

Time for wozza’s input.

Number of engines, approx size etc!

The F50s don’t present too much of a problem to us. The only time we really notice them is on departure; we need to leave four minutes after their departure before launching a jet on the same route (only two minutes if they’re both jets). However, we can launch it ‘wheels up’ (40 seconds ish) behind a Medium jet even if they’re both on the same route instead of the two mintues again. Swings and roundabouts.

How about one of the “Classic Wings” DH Rapides?

They fly sightseeing trips over London occasionally.

KLM Fokker 50s are a common and regular sight at LHR on the Eindhoven – Heathrow service.

They are used on the Rotterdam as well.

– 1 in 2 people was a copper
– A police helicopter spent the afternoon flying in circles, is this normal, and if so a humungous waste of police resources and tax payers money.

All I can say is the UK public would soon complain about the lack of anti-terorrism measures.

The word “visual deterrant” springs to mind.

I think the South is bizzare…because I’m a notherner 😀

Isn;t there a bunch of Tiger Moth’s somewhere down in your rather bizzare world that you call “South” 😀

Come to think of it – it did look like a Tiger Moth.

Who said the south was bizarre – its just unique, special…run-down, crime-ridden,

Wozza

Well it was a bi-plane and it did a circuit above the area of approach and headed off in the same direction others were approaching in, I assure you it was a bi-plane!!! It does sound far-fetched but it was!

And I am willing to give in, it did come to mind it could of been the Malaysian at the time, the red at the front is identical so it most likely was,

Thanks for all the replys – all that footie – I need a cuppa :p

Wozza

What did this bi plane look like?

Was there two?

There is no shortage of smaller airfields and airstrips within a reasonable distance of Greenwich Park so your biplane was probably heading for one of them, rather than for LHR.

tada!

If I remember rightly it was discussed on here that turboprops do still go into Heathrow from time to time?

Biplane into Heathrow? About as doubtful as doubtful comes to be honest!

No red Cathay planes. Could it have been Malaysia? They have a special livery that is predominantely red.
