Some BA news from yesterday…..

Poor old PAX on this flight…..as if a fire alert wasn’t bad enough, the 744 then had issues taking off again! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4913860.stm

The airfield normally takes aircraft upto the size of the B757, therefore all passengers are being flown back to LHR on three A320/321s whilst all baggage and cargo are being flown back on a chartered frieghter. The B744 will then fly out empty with minimum fuel and have to tech stop at a larger airfield to take on more fuel.

Too big for the runway eh? why land there then, in that part of the world, surprisingly there are many large runways…

With a suspected fire onboard, I’d think the crew are more interested in getting it down safely somewhere as soon as possible rather than floating around looking for somewhere longer. Landing distance probably wasn’t an issue, but just because it can land there doesn’t mean it can take off again with pax and fuel onboard for the remaining 2000nm? ish back to LHR.

I don’t think there are any major strips near UAR, or at least any strips bigger than that at Uralsk close by(2472x43m)

Perhaps the prospect of a fire in the hold might have had something to do with it? 🙂
