Hi there members
Been reading a very interesting article in the times regarding the new Jebel Ali Airport in Dubai. This will become the biggest airport in the world and capable of handling 120 million passengers by 2015 where as Heathrows projected growth will be around 89 Million.
The airport will have 6 runways with taxiways at each end, this will enable aircraft to land and not have to wait for other aircraft to pass before crossing a runway. It will also not have night flying restrictions like Heathrow has.
The new Airport should be ready by September 2007 and will be linked by rail and road links to the existing airport so that both can operate as a single entity.
Dubai see tourism and the lucrative transfer passengers using Jebel Ali airport as its main attaction which will appeal to passengers who are put off with long delays, overcrowding, aircraft held in stacks waiting to land at Heathrow.
They see this as being the main reason why they feel the new airport will be better equipt than Heathrow.
As for Heathrow, space is limited and not much more expansion can go on without demolishing houses and purchasing land, a third runway is possible but there is no room to expand the existing terminals and there will always be ATC delays as Heathrow gets busier.
We have to blame succesive governments for failing to look at alternatives or a plan to expand Heathrow in the 70s.
Think of it this way, currently Virgin are the only British Airline to order the A380, so there may well be 6 operating from Heathrow, plus a few from Qantas and Singapore airlines together with Emirates, Heathrow will manage ok with these A380s for space, but in Dubai Emirates will eventually have a fleet of 45 of the type. Would Heathrow cope if B.A had 45 0f these on order.
UK passenger growth since 1995 in the uk is 66% however in Dubai its a massive 248%
Will Heathrow lose out and fall behind ?

…….
UK passenger growth since 1995 in the uk is 66% however in Dubai its a massive 248% ……..
This is because Dubai has benefited from the massive, mind blowing expansion by Emirates. Heathrow has not had this, nor would it have enough market to support such a huge growth from one airline in such a relatively short space of time.
………..Would Heathrow cope if B.A had 45 0f these on order…………
Technically, yes. Terminal 5 will be handling the majority of BA longhaul I believe, once open. And I’m guessing more than 45 747s visit Heathrow on any one day.
Besides, not every one of those 45 A380s would be on the ground at Heathrow at the same time.
But this is a moot point. BA is never going to order that many. Period. They’ll likely order some…. but they’ll never fill 45. That’s about as many seats as their entire long haul fleet alone as it currently stands, concentrated into 45 planes that would not provide a cost effective long haul fleet. BA fly to many places where the 777 seat count is perfect.
As for the question about whether Heathrow will loose out? Certainly not to Dubai.
LHR is a prime Trans Atlantic staging point. Dubai is not. A lot of airlines can transit through LHR from the eastern side of the globe on their way over the Atlantic, and vice versa from America.
Dubai is far to far out of the way to be an effective Trans Atlantic stage.
If developed well, any large Airport in Europe could steal Heathrow’s piece of the cake.

I read the article and thought it wasn’t particularly fair, or accurate towards Heathrow. some of what it said wasn’t accurate – but im just being picky, and these are my opinions.
for a start, Heathrow is not the biggest airport in the world.
also, i don’t think the ‘ultimate’ Jebel Ali set up will be ready for atleast 10 years. the Jebel Ali that is described in the article won’t be built for 2007. i would expect to see just two terminals and 1 or 2 runways built for 2007, the rest coming in phases. i don’t think there is enough traffic through Dubai yet to warrant such an airport of that size, and if all those runways and terminals are built for 2007, they would be highly underutilised as the current Dubai airport can just about cope with current traffic levels – there isn’t enough traffic for there to be a need for such a large airport to work along side an already large, and growing Dubai airport.
the article states that 6 A380s have been ordered by UK airlines, whilst 45 have been ordered by the UAE, and so therefore Dubai, and the UAE will see more A380s than Heathrow. I think that the number of A380s that each city sees will be more or less equal – Heathrow will probably see more A380 movements than any other current airport as it is the world busiest international airports and one of the most constrained – so airlines will more than likely want to fly the A380 into Heathrow in order to reduce the number of flights that they fly – 2 passenger loads on aircraft now could be put onto one A380. i could see other airlines with A380s – SIA etc eventually basing a couple of A380s at Heathrow. Emirates won’t see its full complement of 45 aircraft for quite a while.
Im not thinking about the next two years here, im thinking about the next 1-10 years.
“Would Heathrow cope if B.A had 45 0f these on order.”
i would say yes, because BA would probably replace the 747s with the A380s – ok, yes there are size differences, but only mainly in wingspan – developments at the airport – including rebuilding part of the central terminal area after t5 is completed could solve these space problems.
i don’t think Heathrow has to worry just yet – it will take a lot of time and effort to push Heathrow from first place – Dubai will have to continue its development work on the city and country itself – work to build an important international financial centre in Dubai, as London already is – part of the reason why Heathrow is what it is – the ‘contents’ of the city.
Dubai and the UAE will have to continue to attract mroe than just tourism – and in other ways than just continually buying big international corporations as it has been doing.
the country shouldn’t rely on tourism (its not, but im just saying) – its hardly the Spanish Costa del Sol or Italy – it is afterall, much a desert – i can’t see millions flocking to the country in the near future – and it seems to be attracting just the rich and famous – i haven’t heard much on offer for mr. joe blogs. the region isn’t the safest either. im going off topic…. :diablo:
as i said, just my opinions on the matter, don’t shoot me down too much 🙂

Uh, probably not. I don’t see how these two airports are being compared, considering they are nowhere near each other.
