I’m sure it’s been asked recently, but can anyone explain to me why I saw a 727-200 painted in Pan Am colors parked next to our A318 before we taxied out last weekend? I was flying out of Atlanta International. The nose was painted with the name Clipper Juan Trippe (the Pan Am owner/founder I think?), and the registration was N349PA.
So does anyone know what the deal is? I thought I was halucinating.

I wonder who did the upgrades? I don’t think the Boeing website mentions anything about it, though I haven’t checked it in quite some time.

From what I saw of them over the last few years not all the 727’s had been upgraded with the winglets but most were. I’d been told that they did a complete avionics upgrade on their 727’s but I don’t know exactly what that intails.

Wow! This is all news to me. I thought Pan Am had gone the way of the dinosaur nearly two decades ago. Glad to see 727’s still in commercial service, and in those glorious colors. Too bad I didn’t have a camera with me at the time….
Anyone know how many 727’s and Jetstreams they have? Any avionics improvements for either type?
Also, what’s the story with the winglets on the 727 pictured on the fleet portion of the website? Is Boeing offering this update to remaining 727 operators?
I guess the only thing that can make this better is if they get a few 707-320’s and start doing longer distance routes. What a joy that would be to see!

What’s the issue? Pan Am (incarnation #3) still operates, mainly with 727s – their base is up in the north east somewhere but most of their operations are charter and into Orlando/Sanford. FWIW, there was also a Pan Am 727 at Los Angeles last week, which I photographed taking off.

This must be Pan Am IV now as the last time I remember looking at their route structure they had a lot more than 3 destinations for their 727’s.

They operate a Jetstream 31 between Trenton, Bedford and Portsmouth
Their B727’s operate out of SFB. There is also a new ATL-Tunica route. They also do a lot of charters for Vacation Express

Still a bit odd as the last a lot of us heard they shut their doors last year but I guess they are back again. I saw a PA 727 just this last week (I can’t remember where) and I hadn’t seen one of their jets flying in over a year.
