I agree with CWBalmer, its got to be done some time, although eventually it can feel a bit boring in all fairness, but on a single day you’d be fine, but going too often isn’t great. You will see plenty of airlines that don’t fly into any other UK airport, and there are 747s all over the place. The great thing about LHR is that its constant, aircraft everywhere all the time. Its true that there are BA aircraft everywhere, but then its no worse than CDG or FRA in that respect.

If the aircraft are using Rwy 09 then it isn’t bad to make your way to that end of the runways.

It’s a no brainer! Ya gotta try LHR at some point…. an early start is good for the long haul heavies. Bear in mind that they switch runways about 1400 or so, but you can get the best of both worlds with a little bit of walking…

I think scanners are fine, they only get rattled when you can transmit into them, I got searched at stansted last year and the bloke seen my scanner and didn’t take it off me.

Dunno about Perimeter though, however gatwick’s got a nice sign saying ‘members of the spotting community help us defeat terror’ or something like that, maybe LHR has to.

Speaking of this… What is the current attitude of the police/security… ? Anyone been sent off recently? What about scanners? Used one on my last trips but what is the current situation? I’ll be there next weekend and will not have a car!

If you don’t mind it seeming as though every other aircraft is a BA or BMI A320 short haul aircraft then Heathrow is a SUPERB place to visit. Ok, the BA A320s are good the first few times that you see them, but they get a bit monotonous after a while.

Walking through the maintenance area is also very interesting – you can get very close to parked up aircraft – it was actually one of the highlights for me when i went – never been so close to a 747 before.

Myrtle Avenue is a grassy area at the end of a residential street. Its relatively large and offers without doubt, the best views of landings on runway 27L. Its just a 2 minute walk from Hatton Cross Tube Station.

Is Myrtle Avenue a park or just a little area? LAX has a great park where you can see all the action.

Absolutely worth a visit.

Public transport out of the airport and back in for your return flight is easy and it seems that you can stop almost anywhere you like, without getting moved on. That seems to have been the case for me in the past.

And not only do you have the excitement of 27L arrivals from Myrtle Avenue, but you also have the Visitor’s Centre over the other side of the airfield, which is free and worth a visit if you have never been before.

The traffic at Heathrow is surely the best in the UK and Ireland.

In a word, YES

If its the planes your interested in photographing, in my opinion no UK airport comes close, but dont expect the actual travelling throught it bit to be particularly brilliant
