The 50 options, filled, maybe?

With 787-10s?

Interesting possibilities if nothing else…

SAN FRANCISCO, March 29 (Reuters) – Qantas Airways AX> is very likely to exercise its option to buy another 50 Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner jets on top of an existing order of 65 planes, the company’s chief financial officer said on Wednesday.

The airline, the world’s eighth-biggest passenger airline by market value, also hopes to decide in the coming months on new ultra long-range jets, Qantas Chief Financial Officer Peter Gregg told Reuters in an interview.

In December, the Australian carrier announced it would buy 65 Boeing 787s for more than $10 billion, with the option to purchase another 50, also worth more than $10 billion. Officials met in San Francisco to sign the deal on Wednesday.

“Effectively, there are 65 orders out there in the books straight away and you get the ability to buy another 50 at the prices we have negotiated,” Gregg said. “We will want those 50, I am pretty sure of that.”

He said Qantas had negotiated a discount from Boeing’s list price, but declined to give specific numbers.

Qantas decided on the Boeing jets after also considering the A350 made by Airbus, which is 80 percent owned by European Aerospace Defence & Space Co. and 20 percent by Britain’s BAE Systems Plc .

The diffrence between order and option is that while an order is a firm commitment to buying a particluar aircraft by depositing securities for their purchase or lease etc in a previously negotiate/worked out manner OPTIONS are basically a show willingness to buy more aircraft in the same relative timeframe and within the same relative production slots..There is a time limit after which the Production slots set aside for options are no longer available .

So price is not an issue then?

Dixon is on record in saying that there was very little in the price of both competitors.
Boeing simply were able to deliver quicker along with having the aircraft that offered more flexibility.

Airbus lost because it’s contender the A350, is derived from an old design that’s half way through it’s life cycle, whereas Boeing went to Qantas with a superior clean sheet design for a more technically advanced and more fuel efficient airliner

Boeing and Qantas are finalizing an agreement that will include orders for 45 Dreamliners, with 20 options plus purchase rights for an additional 50 airplanes…
Qantas has yet to announce an engine choice between the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and GE Aircraft Engines GEnx power plants…
Qantas recently announced Jetstar’s plans to launch international flights from Australia in the future…
Boeing now has 354 orders and commitments from 26 customers for the 787.

Nice christmas present for Qantas, Jetstar and Boeing!!!

Why? They’ve expressed how happy they are with the A330’s they operate.

Congratulations to both groups! I was hoping to see an order for the T7… but no doubt this one is certainly a tremendous gift!

[Edit: on second thought, I wonder whether Boeing’s stock price increase yesterday had to do with this…]

Great win for Boeing.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the difference between an “Option” and a “Purchase Right”.

At times these terms seem to be used interchangeably but they do appear to have different meanings.

sorry but its spelled as QANTAS! Just thought would point it out.

Indeed…one of my little bug-bears in life is the use of a ‘u’ in QANTAS, which is an acronym, and so doesn’t need the ‘u’. Queensland And Northern Terrotories Air Service.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Qantas would go with B787s but what about the announcement over the biiger sort of aircraft

Why? They’ve expressed how happy they are with the A330’s they operate.

It turns out the actual order is only for 45, with 20 options, and then ‘rights’ for a further 50.
