LCY finally gets DLR link.

except from this article: http://pressroom.dlr.co.uk/latest_news/details.asp?id=102

The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and Transport Minister Karen Buck today opened the Docklands Light Railway extension at the new London City Airport station.

The London City Airport extension runs from Canning Town to King George V station at North Woolwich via London City Airport and will play an important part in London’s transport plans for the 2012 Olympic Games. The line has four new stations which now connect local and airport passengers direct into the Tube system at Canning Town.

Mayor Ken Livingstone, said: “The Docklands Light Railway City Airport extension is a vital new transport link which has been delivered on time and on budget. We are now starting to see the benefits of Transport for London’s £10bn five-year investment programme.

The next stage of the Docklands Light Railway expansion is the 2.5km extension from King George V under the Thames to Woolwich ****nal which will provide businesses and local communities with another major boost when it opens in early 2009.

For those not familiar with the DLR. DLR is short for “Docklands Light Railway”. It is a light railway (duh) similar to the London underground. However, the DLR has different carriages that are remotely operated. Because of this theses carriages can not run on the rest of the London Underground network. However, the usual London travel cards are applicable.

This new link should make access to LCY by public transport a lot easier. Until recently LCY only had one bus link to the best of my knowledge. This link was rather inconvenient. The only large terminus the bus stopped was at Canary Wharf. And since this bus link was kind a privately operated (never figured out just who or what ran the bus) the prices where rather obsceen.

As some of you may know I used to live in bexleyheath and worked in Erith (in the approach of LCY). Despite this for me, dependent on public transport, it used to be quicker to go to LHR to go spotting then to go to LCY! This new link, and in particular the proposed extension to Woolwich ****nal, should make this airport more appealing to passengers from the southeast. Although I suppose that the airport does not really care much about budget minded passengers. 😉

why won’t the spell checker not type me ****nal? Damn, it does it again. A-R-S-E-N-A-L… woohooo, it works!

Tenthije, how did you like bexleyheath/erith, and when did you leave as I’m pretty sure it has deterioated since you lived here (it does on a daily basis), i live in Bexley,

I lived in Bexleyheath in 2002 for 10 or 11 months. Lived on Bostall Park Ave (off Long Lane). Worked at Europa Worldwide Services at Hailey Road (off Yarnton Way), Erith.

I did not think Bexleyheath was all that bad, but Erith/Belvedere could do with a clean-up. 🙂

Is the parking lot behind the Bexleyheath Asda still a no-go area? 😉

Great news, it’ll be easy(ier) to get to LCY now as its only a train to Lewisham and onto the DLR

I’ll give it a whirl on Thursday as I’m flying in via VLM from Liverpool in the morning.

last time it cost me £35 in a taxi to get to Islington from the airport 😮

Excellent news, the only time I’ve used LCY I had to get the DLR to Canary Wharf, and then wait out in the cold for 45 minutes for the bus. Lots of very unhappy businessmen that morning.

Yes.

It wouldn’t let me type Hugh J****’s user ID, either.

See?
