Btw, what degree did you study and where?
I may not be rdc1000, but I will tell my degree anyway. Studied international logistics at the HEAO Arnhem. Can call myself a bachelor in arts as well as a baccalaureus. Sounds impressive heh? Well, both are the same so perhaps not that impressive.
Most of my study centered around distribution. Getting stuff into and out of warehouses in a efficient way. But other aspects including aviation did feature in the study. So when I talk down a book, I kind a know what I am talking about.
Regards,
Bc. BoA Peter ten Thije (always wanted to write that some day)

I quite agree with you rdc1000, I am finding the book very useful for my studies and also as an entertaining read… it gives you a good insight as to how the LCC market began and what it has developed into.
Btw, what degree did you study and where?
I’m afraid I’m guilty of being a little sarcastic there, I was meaning that many aviation students haven’t a clue about the industry, and therefore the book would actually teach them something (which was the alarming thing!!). Its a bit like the Ryanair book, interesting to read, but not awfully enlightening.
I did Air Transport Management at Loughborough.

I did an aviation based degree, and judging by most of the people on my course, and the knowledge they had then this book was probably what some of them based their dissertations on!!!

Come on GA, he was only asking for a little help, bless him…

Before you can undertake a SWOT analysis on the airline you need to establish in your view the market they are in/the product/service they are offering. It is all very well to say they are an LCC, but if you look deeper than that then there is evidence as to what they are offering.
I would suggest that to do this you focus on issues such as:
1) Frequency of service to destinations
2) Airports (not JUST destinations) served
3) Fare levels
4) What services they offer (whether they are paid for or not they can be very telling, i.e. think about the reasoning behind the use of Servisair lounges at airports….this isn’t just a way of generating revenue….hint)
Then to undertake a SWOT you need to decide where in the overall market place they sit and how they compare within that. I would suggest however that many aspects of their business overlap with a large variety of airlines, so you need to remember that. If you feel you need more to go on then let me know…but I think it is only right that you do some of the work yourself, so that you can build up the knowledge necessary to be sceptical about books 😉

It is useless for anyone with a bit of aviation knowledge.

I would recommend you look to buy a booked called ‘NO FRILLS: The Truth Behind The Low Cost Revolution In The Skies’ by Simon Calder, you may find some useful information in there…? I do have a copy of it, so if you want to borrow it, PM me with your address and I will post it on to you.
I have the book too. It is useless for anyone with a bit of aviation knowledge. Most of the information found there can be found as easily (or even more easily) in the archive section at the forums of KEY, airliners, jetphotos etc. A lot of interesting anecdotes, but not really something you would want to base your thesis on. (of course it will look cool on the references page ;))

Hard one as you really need to have been around a while to fully understand their strengths and weaknesses as many would be from comparing them to other airlines probably mainly British Airways and Ryanair.
They do not have any public strategies with the only info being made available being load stats etc and other things that a Limited Company has to make public.
Don’t bother writing to them either as unlike Virgin Atlantic or Bmi they wont reply or will reply saying they cannot give any info out.
I could post a list of strengths and weaknesses but i dont have the time right now. If you want to PM me i could prob give you a brief rundown in Janurary.
Do you have an Aviation background (i.e. is it a hobby etc) as I would say if it wasnt this could be a hard choice of project!

crag,
I am a university student studying an air travel degree, and we are currently learning about low-cost ailrines and the impact that they have had on the air travel markets. Can’t really give you much info, as we have only started this topic in the last few days, but have you looked at Easyjet’s website? When I last looked there was quite a lot of info in the ‘About Us’ section, details about competitive strategy and stuff which may be of use to you.

Alternatively, you can check out the link below for Amazon as it is relativley cheap…
