Whilst I was in SYD, I purchased an SIA MD-11 1/200 plastic PPC model. Interesting as they had them on order but cancelled, never having taken delivery of the type, yet there is a model.

yeah, that sticker at teh rear of the aircraft, with the stars and stripes, commemorates SIA’s first flight to LAX ‘California here we come’, which proves how long ago the pic was taken.

i’ve seen a lot of pics with the smokey tristar start-ups – why was this a/c so prone to them over others?

G-MULL in a bit of a state at Manchester… Anyone know what finally became of the BA/Cally birds ?

I always found the sight of Caledonian Tristars a bit odd having been used to their DC-10’s in the old days. Although I think painting up the DC-10’s in BA colours was even odder !

The L1011’s engines were in fact, mouted further out than the DC-10’s were. The reason for that was the relative position of the No. 2 engine’s exhaust. On the L1011, it was essentially at the same level as the No’s 1 and 3 engine, so they spread them out. On the DC-10, it was further up, so the 1 and 3 were closer together. As far as one of the wing engines going out on the Lockheed and producing more yaw? Yeah, so. What if the same thing were to happen on a twin engined plane? It would produce even greater yaw since they wouldn’t have the benefit of that extra thrust coming from the middle of the fuselage. Either way, it’s noting a little rudder deflection can’t handle.

Both are sadly disappearing from our skies, gradually, but I much prefer the DC-10 to the Tristar. Only choosing that becase I’ve flown on the DC-10 and not the Tristar, but I guess my vote could be based on looks, too.

Right KAbir but that’s a nice opportunity to post some good pix 🙂

well…for the millionth time why do we need to compare two aircrafts like this…..they both are good for something otherwise they wont be flying!
Of course talking what c/s looks nice on what is different, but if u see there histories, tech. specs. etc, they both are good aircrafts.

Very nice pictures Gary. Thanks alot. The handling company that I used to work for handled the RAF movements thru STN (and still do I think) It was good to work on Tristars and VC10s.

For looks there is no competition whatsoever – the TriStar gets it. The nose of the DC-10 looks squashed, the TriStar has a beautifully shaped nose. The DC-10’s rear engine looks just awful, the TriStar’s rear engine blends in nicely. I’ve not flown on either type so I can only comment on appearance, but I would have thought that the L1011 had a better safety record.

now for the dc-10 g-dmca which just didnt seem as special for some reason… and i never liked the look of the dc-10

thanks for all the replies the tristar just wins so far thought id post a picture of the tristar and the dc-10 ive flown on 1st the tristar.. ill never forget getting on that plane looking out the window and seeing the rolls royce sign on that beautiful engine…. what a machine

My company has operated both types in the last 5 years. The DC10 is a better long haul aircraft while the TriStar was better for filling with lots of people and making a shortish hop to the Med.

Nice pics all. Especially the Cally Tristar ones! The tristar gets my vote over any other aircraft full stop!
Although, my first flight was on a DC-10 funnily enough, with BCal. lol
