In the next few years, 140 million euros will be invested in the modernization and expansion of Belgrade Airport, as it was confirmed yesterday by the Serbian transport minister. Amongst the major projects will include the following:
– revitalization of the flight control system
– building renovations
– increasing airport capacity
– adding cargo terminal
– adding train station
– construction of luxury hotel
A few potential investors have already expressed their interest in participating in the airport expansion. The United States company, DHL, stated that they would likely open direct flights to Belgrade after the main project is completed. Furthermore, Boeing have also expressed their interest in opening a service center at Belgrade, most probably for the Boeing 737 models. Its believed that the opening of any Boeing facility would very much depend on the future acquisitions made by JAT Airways. However no big purchases will be made within the next five years.
Similarly Nis Airport should be once again reopened by mid-summer, after its runway, taxiways, and terminal were heavily damaged back in 1999. In addition to the good news, Adria Airways will soon start flying to Belgrade, JAT Airways started flying the Boeing 737-400, and British Airways have added another weekly flight to Belgrade from LHR.

I was last at BEG in 89. Not one of the worlds noteworthy airports even then, although it did have two old JAT aircraft in its small “museum” a Convair 440 and a Sud Caravelle. It would certainly figure for Boeing to open a service centre there as JAT has a fairly large 737-300 fleet as well as a leased 400. The last 727s and DC9-30s go this year and the sole DC10-30 is now based in Havana on lease to Cubana.
