Al’Qaeda planned to break into Legoland in Windsor and launch a missle attack on planes using Heathrow. This was apparently the real reason behind the Army presence at LHR in February.

Yes Comet I too have been along that same walkway, about a year and a half ago, I was spotting too. But yes I agree, the aircraft become very easy targets from here.

I think London City Airport is a big security risk – there is a long walkway which runs parallel to the runway, giving completely unrestricted views of all aircraft. It would be all too easy to launch a missile or shot at an aircraft there, and viewing is in no way discouraged, I spent ages there in September with my camcorder, and no one takes any notice. There should be more security patrols in all airport areas like that, including searches if necessary. People who are innocently viewing would have nothing to fear, and it may act as a deterrent to those with other motives.

I saw this news crop up on Sky News this morning about 0300hrs. They said a British Theme park near LHR was to be used, at first I thought it was Thorpe Park… but then thanks to the link given by Mongu I see it wasn’t.
Thorpe Park is right under the flight path for LHR… get good views there. 🙂

They have a Legoland in India? 😀
I read about this today and understand that it would have been the ideal opportunity for terrorists because Legoland was closed for the Winter season and it would have taken a few minutes for anybody to prevent the launching of a missile.
Surely, if an attack is going to take place from Legoland in Windsor, some miles from Heathrow, it would best having tanks there opposed to at the airport. What purpose did these military vehicles and soldiers actually serve?
