Teesside will get Low Cost Operations

After months of speculation (and negativity from me), Teesside Airport are expected to announce today that they will be the new base for “Bmi Baby” with low cost operations likely to start in October 2003. Early indications are that “Bmi Baby” will serve an initial three destinations; Belfast, Geneva & Prague. Further destinations are expected to follow with mediterranean resorts being the favoured spots.

Rest assured I will be watching the Teesside Airport website today for confirmation of this news.

Could this be the turning point for us up here on Teesside……?

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

cheers – i couldn’t find it in the 3 pages of posts that i was looking throught – as said earlier market saturation is something they’ll have to be careful of – on the positive side i presume LBA will be first choice diversion with bmi mainline already having a base here! – another consideration for the arpon extension i’m crying out for!!! 😉

Yup Northern England. Scotland is best with just Easyjet and Ryanair. Much more respectable if you ask me…

The north of Ing-ur-lund you mean, surely… :p

Low cost operations at ABZ, EDI and GLA are pretty sparse…

I question Teeside as an airport for bmibaby. Ok, brilliant for Teeside but frankly one would question the point. Seems to be scrapping the barrel of low cost hubs if you ask me and shows little initiative and a huge lack of options. Saturation point is well and truly upon us and consolidation will soon be coming. Like hell you are going to fill a 737 up to Prague up from Teeside considering that Newcastle has this route already. It’s just madness and a complete killing of a good idea already in use at Easyjet.
Bmibaby have lost options. Why they need a forth base in as many months is beyond me. Cardiff, East Midlands, Manchester and Teeside, now let us consider and Ryanair how long it took them to establish a new base, or even Easyjet. Bmi are not concentrating on one area, they are concentrating on four all in close proximity to other long established low cost bases. Is there really a need in the market?

Gosh, at least Flybe. saw a good market opportunity at Southampton.

Hate to be a pessimist, but……

I reckon that bmibaby are expanding too fast and will make costly mistakes, if they haven’t already made them. I hear that their Cardiff loads (well “loads” wouldn’t be the right word to use – if you catch my drift!) are minging. Anyone care to comment?

I reckon that in the next 6 months, one of the new kids on the block will give up the ghost. Am I alone with these thoughts? I know there is going to be increased demand for air travel in the coming years and more capacity will be necessary but if these boys don’t do it slowly, will they last?

I’m not trying to stir up a hornet’s nest here – just voicing an opinion.

Good luck to bmibaby at MME.

Düsseldwarf….

Confirmation in the local paper this evening that Ryanair are considering expanding at Teesside with a-net rumours suggesting Germany as one destination.

You can tell I’m excited today can’t you? 🙂

lol…Rhino.

I recall you mentioning it and you were proved right!:)

I had certainly never seen anything official on this until this morning though. There is something on a-net today about Ryanair expanding at Teesside – don’t know if that is just a rumour though.
