Horizon on BBC2 27th March

On Horizon on BBC2 this Thursday is a special investigation into the crash of the American Airlines A300 in the New York suburb back in 2001, may be an interesting programme.

Coincidence – the same message at exactly the same time!

Well guess what… they changed the programme ! Still Horizon, but a feature on the Mars space mission instead.

The A300 programme will be on in May instead according to the announcer. Never mind there’s a good prog about the A320 on Discovery Wings.

yeah, but it was already breaking up by then, as the tail plane was fished out of the bay between JFK and the part of Queens it came down in, so I don’t see that much relevance in the engine question…

I remember in the newspapers the day after the crash it said that the aircraft involved had a history of engine problems and that very morning its take off had been delayed while emergency work was carried out on an engine. One of the engines dropped off onto a garage, I don’t know if it was the same one which had been troublesome but it must have destabilised the aircraft immensely and probably contributed to the eventual crash.

Well, Horizon will certainly give you are detailed view of the event presenting both the argument from the theory of turbulance to other more sinister reasons like a bomb etc as a counter argument.

I’m looking forward to seeing this as this accident has always been a strange one for me.

I can’t believe wake turbulence alone could bring down an A300 so there must be other factors involved. I have heard pilot error mentioned but will reserve thoughts on that until I see the programme.

I know how you feel Saab, I was quite fascinated by the sound of last week’s Horizon programme, it is so maddening when everything is cancelled for the war coverage, especially when the same footage is being shown repeatedly, though very little seemed to have been altered in yesterday’s schedules. I shall keep an eye open for the plane crash programme and remain optimistic that it will actually be shown on time!!

IKBrunel,
Sadly I expect this to be cancelled and re-scheduled as last Thursdays Horizon was cancelled (much to my annoyance) because of war coverage. I expect either BBC 2 to be showing last week’s scheduled episode or further war coverage this Thursday.
However, I am sure it will indeed be very interesting as most of them are. Horizon is one of my favourite programmes… it can make such a tedious subject seem so fascinating!
