March 9, 2003 at 11:50 pm
I went up to LGW this morning. Got there about 11:45am. I Firstly parked along side the runway in a side turning on the road that runs parrallel with the main runway.
The aircraft were taking off away from the south terminal building, so the spot where I was parked was to say the least a very crappy spot, because half of the time, the aircraft were already pretty high up, and being the number cruncher that I am, this made it harder to see the registrations on the planes.
About 12:00pm, made my mind up to go to the spectators viewing area… I haven’t been up there for nearly 6 years!!! , how it has changed! Was very pleased with the price to get in… ยฃ1.50 for as long as you want.
Being the usuall Heathrow spotter, today was a real treat for me, saw the new liveries of Britannia, MyTravel, Monarch, Air 2000 and Thomas Cook. First time I had seen any of these.
The last time i visited LGW was in July last year… and since then many of the charter airlines have been painted up in the new colours… all but Britannia it seemed?
Dave… you said you were up there this morning, from what time were you there?, I may have seen you without noticing? I do agree with you though, the viewing is becoming more and more restricted due to on going building work. Nice to see that the comet with the short wings is still there. ๐
By 1:30pm the landing traffic was rapidly fizzling out. But at the same time depature traffic was booming. Got really busy. Near enough the whole of the south terminal was empty by 2pm.
So overall, an enjoyable day for me, and a real treat at that. I plan to go up there again very soon. Going up to LHR, has become a little tiresome as of late… keep seeing the same thing over and over, just made a change to see something different.

The biggest suprise of the afternoon for me was the Belavia 154 and the Air Plus Comet A310.
So overall, a good couple of hours spotting. I would have stayed longer but… it was way to windy, and i was freezing!!!

Hiya Dave.
That A310 APC, taxied to the north terminal, from its remote stand just as we left.
So I would imagined that it took off about an hourish later?
By: dcfly - 10th March 2003 at 22:32
Dan
I agree the photo opportunities are much better at MAN
Andrew
I was at LGW up till 11.30, after reading your list of what you saw I wish I’d stayed a bit longer. Did the Air Plus 310 take off, it was there when we got there about 9ish
Were the Continental 757 and 767s still there, difficult to read them off when they’re parked on the other side of the main pier

OK, it may operate a flight or two to LHR, but from a photography point of view the oportunities at MAN are much, much better than LHR (and I haven’t seen / photographed one yet).

What’s the big deal about an LX 330 being in the UK?

Good to hear that you had a good day.
Would love a trip down Gatwick sometime, although its a bit too far and I can’t be bothered to drive all that way!
I am though buying a new camera at the end of March from a shop in West Sussex, don’t know whether to drive down or have it delivered yet, would be ideal to drive down and then test it a LGW though!
On a similar subject, MAN should be a good day on Wednesday, I’ll be there if anyone fancies it.
Loads of charters for the Man Utd V Basle game include:
Swiss – different types including an A330!
Neos 737’s
Belair 757
Edelweiss A320
Hapag Lloyd A310
Aero Lloyd – Can’t remember type

Yeah the Belavia 154, was quite noisey… but the few 732 that were taking, now there the noisey ones!
I went with a friend yesterday, and when we saw the Emirates 777 go out to line up to take off, my friend said I bet thats gonna make a noise. So i said nah not as much as the 732’s.
When the first 732 went up he was so shocked at the noise. lol :p
Like I said though, i’m deffinately gonna do this again soon… anyone wanna join me?

Those BA ATRs were obviously from GCI…I was up there in the morning so I probably saw wanna those aircraft listed take off at this end.
The Belavia 154 was a surprise for me also when I was at LGW two summers ago. It made a welcome change from the charters around in the afternoon…the noise, the smoke!

G-BRIF – Flew that last March from ACE-MAN – same sector in 4 and a half weeks – flown both G-BRIF and G-BYAA, G-BRIG and G-BYAB would be nice to round off the B762 fleet!

Glad to hear you had a good day Andrew. When I flew out of London Gatwick the other week, I was pleased to see the charters opposed to the larger carriers which fly over my house each day approaching Heathrow.
that was the first time I’d been out of Gatwick since last March! I also saw the Monarch Airlines A321 G-OZBF aircraft parked on a remote stand as we taxiied to runway 8R aboard our British Airways G-DOCN.
No mention of any larger carriers for the charter industry, obviously because they jet off earlier in the morning 8 or 9 o clock for their long haul routes. I got a glimpse of MyTravel G-MLJL as I trotted across the tar-mac from the North Terminal to board the BA 737 as well as some others, this was just before 8 in the morning.
Nice to hear you had a good time. Going to impress us with some pics when you get your scanner? ๐
