Another Big one to bite the dust?

From Dailyrecord.co.uk :

AIRLINE SELL OFF
Mar 6 2003

DUTCH airline giant KLM is to be sold off, leaving 30,000 workers facing redundancy.

Both British Airways and Air France are poised to snap up the carrier, which could threaten 600 jobs in the UK.

KLM chief executive Leo van Wijk has told board members that a forthcoming alliance deal will eventually see the end of the KLM brand.

Workers at Heathrow Airport will bear the brunt of any job cuts.

The airline’s profits plunged in the wake of September 11. The looming war with Iraq has also hit bookings.

I’ve looked through every major European busienss news source and there is nothing on this story, it seems that it is just an old rag trying to sell papers with lies. I don’t believe it for one minute.

I flew KLM last year LHR-AMS-TXL-AMS-LHR and they were pretty good, nothing special, but they were better than some and all of the flights were full!

Well whats the Future for UK regional Aviation? – if BA take control will they not try and stop the KLM UK/Cityhopper sucessful through flights to AMS from more or less every regional airport in the Country – it would basically take a big competitor off of BAs hands and they may decide that they want to route this Traffic into their own hub systems? – just a theory anyway!!

It would be a tragedy for civil aviation if KLM went. I’ve never travelled with them, and I wouldn’t, but I would never want to see them go bankrupt.

Of which there are only 600 so why would they bear the brunt of the job cuts? What about Amsterdam their major hub? Just all seems rather ominous to me.

KLM is currently expanding its fleet, new runways at Amsterdam, high load factors…how the hell this could be a sign of an airline on its last legs would beat me. They are not going anywhere yet though what the future holds for the airline is beyond me (Consolidation in Europe).

Have to agree with Saab, never heard of it in the Dutch media, so the story is ludicrous.

I refuse to believe anything that Rag writes…

They’ll be telling us certain football players are Liars, Cheats and Thieves next… oh, no, hold on, they already have… When was that court case again?

Anyway… Bhoycott the Daily Ranger… including it’s website. Hit that muppet Peter Cox in the wallet, where it hurts.

There’s no tears lost here. I have not been impressed with KLM based on personal experience and that of friends and family.

Also, KLM could have bee saved a few years ago if it had agreed to the acquisition by BA. But they tried to punch above their weight and insisted on being an “equal partner” in a “merger” with a far bigger airline.

At the present time I think it is highly unlikely that BA has the resources to try again. Northwest certainly do not either and I cannot think of any other “natural fit” airline which does.

I think however, that KLM will essentially survive. Most of the more profitable long haul sectors will be retained and some others will be contracted out, as will lots of short haul services – pretty much in the Sabena mould.

Chances are Northwest will take over the running, as both airlines already have a strong partnership. I would expect KLM to keep their money making routes though.

Yeah…I know that I am well out of step here, but I don’t apologise for that. The bulk of my aviation career was in the time of big and healthy full service and flag carriers. Sure the flights were more expensive but in the main the planes were fairly full and from a passengers point of view the service and welfare backup was there and it all worked. The people and cargo all got to where they wanted to go, or in the case of the pax fairly close to where they wanted to go, providing the airline operated to the airport of your choice. The cabins had a full and proper clean between flights by trained staff and, in the main, decent food was served included in the price of your ticket. Whether we shall see those heady days again is hard to predict, the looming war making it even harder. Some great names and liveries are now gone forever, and while it may be good for people to be able to fly from Newquay to Lower Toussous Intl or wherever for £2.50 every weekend, lets take some time to remember the employees out there who have paid the price for those “lovely cheap fares” by either losing their jobs or sufferering a dramatic drop in their standard of living and working conditions. This LoCo lark is very much a double edged sword!

Speaking of loco…. yep you guessed it… 11 march! A new one will grace Luton to take on Easyjet.

Klm should not just be left to flounder though. Such a big airline, and of course the national flag carrier… you’d think the Gov. would help just a little!

Yes I know this will set of all you “market forces” fans off on one, but I think its high time that Govts. be allowed to step and assist the flag carriers and restore some common sense and stability to this industry. The demise of airlines such as KLM does no one any favours……………..over to the LoCo fanatics! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

What a dreadful shame.

It’s sad that the consequences of September 11th are still being felt.
