Flight 1

Most airlines assign “flight 1” to their prestige routes. I only know a few of these, like:

British Airways BA1 LHR-JFK (Concorde)
Air France AF1 CDG-JFK (Concorde)
Emirates EK1 DXB-LHR (B777)
Qantas QF1 SYD-LHR (B744)
Air New Zealand NZ1 AKL-LHR (B744)
Qatar Airways 1 DOH-LHR (A332)
Air Jamaica 1 KIN-LHR (A340)
Virgin Atlantic VS1 LHR-JFK (B744)

Does anyone know anymore?

RE: Flight 1

Lufthansa did a major re-numbering type program in the early 1990s.There system uses different digits for different regions, like 4 for North America and 6 for South America.

RE: Flight 1

The Leipzig flights probably were presitguous in the cold war – there can’t have been many West/East German flights in those days so the few in existence probably had the best aircraft and crews, to show the commies who was winning!

Just a guess.

Lulea-Stockholm SK001
Gatwick-Mahe HM001
San Francisco-Hong Kong-Singapore SQ001
San Francisco-Tokyo JL001

Technically not all airlines assign their 001 code to their most prestigious route…Leipzig-Frankfurt!

RE: Flight 1

Virgin did it because at the start it was the only flight they did! As a rule of thumb (yes there are a lot of exceptions) odd numbers are westbound and even are eastbound.
