Pic of the Day :: Night time @ Kai Tak

A British Airways 744 on approach to Kai Tak back in 1998 – the airport renowned for such dramatic approaches.

I expect some of you will have seen this photo before, it’s had over 7,000 views on Airliners.net, but I thought I’d post it anyway!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-01-03 AT 08:34 PM (GMT)]Now the second one looks 100% real but theres something about that first one… it looks like its a picture of a model that has been stuck onto the background picture?

If it is a real shot, then hats off to who ever took it. Both great shots. 🙂 Cheers for posting.

Here’s the second one on Airliners.net, I think it’s slightly better, more light to see on the ground etc..

The Photographer says:

“Clear ‘before night” shoot on flying aircraft on IGS approach to Kai Tak – the shutter speed is only 1/15s! The background, the night scene of Hong Kong was blurred as light lines”

That would be a difficult shot to pull off. With such little light you would have to use a long shutter speed (which is what creates the blurry background) but at the same time need to keep the aircraft at the same point in the frame all the way around to keep the it sharp, which is a very difficult skill!

Brilliant photo!

I know nothing about photography, but I really like the way the camera caught the speed of the aircraft, almost like it is suspended in mid air. Bravo!
