FR9271, a Boeing 737-800 en route from London Stansted to Eindhoven (Netherlands) was forced to divert to Rotterdam Airport on Wednesday (01Jan). The airline was not aware that Eindhoven Airport was closed for the Holiday.
Eindhoven Airport claims it notifies all airlines that it closes on the 3 major Holidays.
hmmm – which end was the lack of communication at??

RE: Which other apt in the Netherlands is both civil and military?
Bad guess EGNM, the airport is in the east of the country and currently only holiday/business charters next to the military operation.

Prestwick is still an RNAS Station – RNAS Gannet i think – but i cant think of any others that still are – there are loads that used to be – Newcastle, Leeds, Teeside, Norwich etc etc

Edinburgh used to be RAF Turnhouse as well as the BAA Airport, Prestwick was a Sea King base and USAF Galaxy/Starlifter port of call.

On a slight tangent, I think the USAF have an airbase at Frankfurt Airport. From the terminal I could see loads of C-17’s.

RE: LMAO at Ryanair
Couple of days late as I am very busy at work these days, EGNM you are right Eindhoven Airport Welschap is an airport with both civil and military operations. Sometimes this is a disadvantage, look at Ryanairs flight, sometimes an advantage, the had a bomb alert in the pax terminal (I remember vaguely end of last year) but operations were taken on quiet quickly by moving civil ops to the militairy side of the airport.

“… this is the captain again, don’t be upset by our previous announcement as you must know by now, that as Ryanair customers we always land miles away from the town or city stated on your ticket” (lol)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-01-03 AT 09:53 PM (GMT)]”Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, we are currently flying at an altitude of 37,000ft, and the temperature outside is currenlty at a chilly -12 degrees centigrade. The weather at our destination is chilly and snow. But not to worry, as you wont be going there because some silly fool forgot to tell me that its shut for the day due to the holidays!!!! 😛

RE: LMAO at Ryanair
it just seems so clumsy that it managed to get through so many differant authorities etc – i believe Eindhoven is a KLU (Dutch Airforce) base hence the closure.

RE: LMAO at Ryanair
I would say there are 3 areas at fault here.
1- Ryanair flight ops for not picking up the problem at the flight planning stage
2- The pilots for not checking the NOTAMs on the day (NOtices To AirMan)
3- Eurocontrol for accepting the flightplan to a closed destination.
