Bmi British Midland is to lease an A330 aircraft to SAA over the next few months. The aircraft has been painted up in the full SAA c/s.

I saw the above aircraft at Manchester this morning. I hear that BMI are stopping the Washington route for the winter.

Isn’t bmi cutting IAD and just keeping ORD on their routes from MAN?So really there is no need for two A330s?

I heard today that 2 bmi A330’s are going to SAA on lease, 1 for 6 months and 1 for a year. They will help with the conversion process for crews in anticipation of SAA acquiring A340’s.

The 330 in the picture could sure do with a clean though, then the SAA colours would look a lot better!

Most aircraft always look good in the SAA colours. I thought we would have seen an A340 in the SAA colour scheme because I believe Lufthansa were giving them a couple. Anyone got any pics?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-11-02 AT 04:33 PM (GMT)]I don’t think SAA are to join the Star Alliance. BMI have just had 2 of there A330’s placed into storage. One of these being the one on lease to SAA.
It would be good though if SAA were to join! 🙂

BD was in the star alience colourscheme so i think they have just removed the stickers and put on the south african ones – bmi are sending another A330 down sometime – i really hope they dont wreck the bmi c/s on it as the other 2 a/c are both in the full c/s

Obviously Star seem a fraction too confident that SAA will join the Star Alliance…
I actually think it is because this aircraft was in the special Star Alliance colours so it was painted in full SAA colours. Normally I believe a sticker is stuck on the aircraft to show it is being leased by a different airline. I would think that because this was in Star Alliance colours, it would be best to the A330 in the full SAA colours so people don’t get the wrong idea. The fact the A330 still carries the logo could be because of a painting error or just a reminder that this aircraft is owned by bmi.
