BGY ? LIN? MXP???

I am thinking of going for a trip to Milano and Lugano in January (for ice hockey of all things), but when i checked out lastminute.com to get a variety of flight schedules, it turns out BA is the cheapest, but they actually fly to “Bergamo Milano”?

Excuse me, but isnt Bergamo another city alltogether?

There are also three other airports, Linate and something called BGY, and MXP.
Linate is pretty close to Milan i gather, i remember the big SAS crash there. But where is BGY and MXP?

RE: BGY ? LIN? MXP???

Bmi have flights from LHR to LIN, so i guess that would be the one to go for. Somehow 5kms sounds better than 50 :))

Cheers :7

RE: BGY ? LIN? MXP???

LIN = Milano-Linate airport, the old city airport nowadays mainly served by Alitalia
MXP = Milano-Malpensa airport, the international airport of Milan
BGY = Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport, nowadays marketed as Milano-Bergamo

LIN is about 5 km to the east of the city
MXP is about 40 km to the northwest of the city
BGY is about 50 km to the northeast of the city

I would recommend BGY for a flight to Milan, as this airport is less crowded, easy-on easy-off, and with good public transport to Milan. MXP is a mess, and for LIN you would most probably have to fly Alitalia.

LUG is about 80 km north of Milan, and there are direct trains between the two cities. Flying to LUG, however, means Swiss via either Zurich or Basel, and high prices, as you have already found out.

Peter

RE: BGY ? LIN? MXP???

It’s the finals of the European Cup. There will be matches both in Lugano and Milan. If my team make it that is, just have to knock out Belfast first 🙂

I checked out flight prices to Lugano via Zurich but the prices were extortionate. 260 pounds or something with Cross. x(

RE: BGY ? LIN? MXP???

MXP is the newer Milan airport (Malpensa), where all the airlines are supposed to move to. I believe it’s about an hour away from the city centre by road. Bergamo isn’t too much further, either, LUG is also pretty close, but only LX fly there (I think) so you’d have to go either via ZRH or BSL.

Is it Davos you’re going to? prob. easier just to get a train from ZRH, via Chur if you are.
