AA jet to divert

American Airlines Jet Makes Emergency Landing In LA
Monday September 23, 4:09 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (AP)–A Chicago-bound American Airlines MD-80 made an emergency
landing Monday at Los Angeles International Airport after it struck a flock
of birds during takeoff from San Diego.
Flight 1450, carrying 131 passengers and five crew members, landed at 12:32
p.m. PDT (1932 GMT), said Tom Winfrey, an airport spokesman.

The captain had reported possible damage to the plane’s nose, said Todd
Burke, a spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline. After takeoff,
the pilot delayed landing in Los Angeles to first burn off fuel, Burke said.
MD-80s can’t dump fuel, he added.

The jet struck the birds as it took off from San Diego International Airport
at 10:04 a.m. PDT, (1704 GMT) Los Angeles International Airport spokeswoman
Gaby Pacheco said.

RE: AA jet to divert

the radome being shot off because of hail … reminds me of the incident of VC 10 to Bahrain of BOAC i think, somewhere in the gulf it took off and because of hail its radome was totally struken off and the engines were damaged. It was escorted down by a RAF Hunter.

RE: AA jet to divert

A friend of mine is working at AF maintenance facility at ORY.
He told me that a couple of years ago , the pilot of a Fokker 100
noticed that one of the engines swallowed a bird or something just before landing at about 300 feet.

For sure he reported the incident and when they to a look in the engine , the so-called bird was a …. rabbit !!!

They assume that a buzzard released his prey when he saw the jet.

RE: AA jet to divert

Last winter there was an AirTransat TriStar at Lyons (don’t know if it’s still there) which was awaiting being assessed as a write off after incurring damage from flying through a hail storm. I took a look at it and the radome was shot to pieces.
