BA B747 'City of Oxford'

Hello folks,
Back in the early eighties my sister won a trip to communist China in a competition in the Daily Telegraph. She and the other competition winners were one of the few ordinary westerners allowed to visit the country at that time. The trip gained alot of interest in our local press, and to some extent in the national media.Sadly,my sister died a few years ago,but we have a number of press cuttings, photos etc of the trip. One of these is a publicity shot of the group with the British Airways flight crew who flew them, standing underneath a Boeing 747 with the name ‘City of Oxford’ just visible at the top of the pic. Despite various hunts through search engines, books and web pages,I’ve been unable to find out the exact identity of this aircraft.Does anybody out there have any info?Is she still in BA/airline service?
Any info much appreciated…:)

raf air craft go via wideawake (asceion island)

argentine aircraft carry widows to visit graves

tourist come by cruise ship from what i read

people visitng the uk take the direct raf flight – the palnee is a standard tristar that noramlly moves troops – i think they take limited cargo as well.

the flight link with chile or uraguy is al ways dogey as few people use it

Yes, I went to the Falkland Islands gov’t website.

There is a regular Lan Chile flight (2 or 3 stops before reaching Mount Pleasant, MNP) from Santiago.

The RAF do sell seats on their Tristars from RAF Brize Norton too, with a 2 hour refuelling stop on Ascension isaland.

Fares are £1,500 with the RAF and about £1,000 with BA and Lan Chile via LHR, Madrid, Santiago, Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas. Aircraft is an A320.

I never imagined you could buy tickets on military aircraft!!

Which would you prefer?

I’m not sure how you would go about getting on the RAF,maybe if you searched on the internet?
You can also get to the Falklands via Argentina. Some airline operate a 737 from from Buenos Aires to Port Stanley.

RE: BA B747 ‘City of Oxford’

How do you book that if you want to go there for four or five days on holiday?

Maybe a silly question, maybe not – is there any connection through Buenos Aires?

To get to the Falklands you can go on the weekly RAF Tristar flight from Brize Norton. They allow civilians to travel on these flights as well.

I like the EAL scheme, especially the different colours and how they all have the black tail and rear fuselage. I saw the Red one in Amsterdam last week, we taxied right up next to her so I got a close look. Really sharp.

Unfortunatelly I don’t have a scanner so I can’t put the pics into a digital format myself, but I’ll look into various avenues and see what I come up with.
Just as a side note,my sister also lived in the Falklands for a couple of years in the early 90’s.I’ve got pics of snowbound TriStars and VC10’s at Port Stanley, and I’ll try and dig out and scan some of those too.She certainly wasn’t one for average destinations!
Thanks again for all your feedback folks…

Tragic news, sorry to hear it.

It would be incredibly interesting to see some of these press cuttings though. Any chance of seeing some scan-ins?

Hey brings back memories. I can remember walking down the North Terminal at Gatwick and all we could see were DC-10’s. I had a phopbia about DC-10’s at the time and was praying it wasn’t a DC-10 we were getting on!

RE: BA B747 ‘City of Oxford’

EAL have bought the City of Oxford from BA.

Interestingly this was the first ever 747 I flew on! We flew Gatwick to Orlando about 1994, although looking a bit taty on the outside it was quite a nice flight.

RE: BA B747 ‘City of Oxford’

Ty very much guys, much appreciated.Nice to know she’s been roaring over our heads all these years (I live between the approach paths for 27L and 27R at Heathrow) Not sure I think much of her new EAL scheme, the old BA Union Jack scheme is much more my style. Does anyone know if she’s on lease from BA or have EAL taken ownership of her?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-08-02 AT 08:16 AM (GMT)]Unfortunately the BA 747-200 ‘City Of Oxford’ is no longer in the BA fleet because of Cutbacks after September 11th.(All -200s were disposed of)However, the aircraft you are looking for went under the registration G-BDXG and was in the BA Blomsterang c/s.The aircraft now flies for European Aircharter.
Take the Link for pictures of the aircraft.

Mate, sorry to hear that about your sis. I’m doing some research for you on this aircraft. Hopefully I will find it, if not me one of the other forum users.
