PIA Plans USD$2 Billion Fleet Expansion:
Pakistan’s flag carrying airline, PIA, is to spend USD$2 billion on modernizing its fleet with a mixture of Boeing and Airbus wide-bodied jets.
The state-owned airline announced it is to acquire eleven new planes over the next nine years to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing, Airbus and Fokker aircraft.
The new order will be made up of Boeing 777s and Airbus A340s with three Boeings arriving this year. A further eight planes will be delivered between 2006 and 2011. The decision to bring its fleet into line with other leading carriers was confirmed earlier this week.
PIA, the country’s largest carrier, also plans to start new services to destinations including Glasgow, Nairobi, Istanbul, Tehran, Mashad, Tashkent and Almaty. In addition, it will introduce non-stop US flights to Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles.

Nonstop, flying to LAX? Flying westbound, that’s a hell of a long flight! Not quite sure what the mileage there is, but could the A340-500 even make that without a tech stop?

Yes, Glasgow’s Evening Times today talks about PIA planning nonstop services from GLA to Lahore and/or Faisalabad, possibly from as soon as September.
