i have a copy of the official brochure for the 1966 Airshow price 4/- (four shillings or twenty pence). there are two or three statistics which might be of some interest on GA. Other items relate to military aircraft of the time and might be of interest on Historic.
In 1966 there were about 8,500 PPL holders flying around 720 light aircraft. The author of the article claims that ‘a good modern aircraft’ would have cost between £3 and £6,000 with a VFR panel
Gliding as a sport was expanding with 232 clubs and 435 gliders
Over three days, Farnboro’ received nearly 300,000 visitors
By the end of 1966 world sales of British Aerospace products will total in excess of £200,000,000.

I’ve seen a figure of 15,000. Published – I think – by the LAA. That might be Permit owners only.

Interesting. There are currently 28,000 PPL holders (according to Wikipedia, so make of that what you will)
