[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-07-02 AT 09:10 PM (GMT)]From Friday, manx-airlines.com closed for new bookings. Nearly all their aircraft are now in BA colours and from September their flights will carry BA codes. They will be a full part of British Airways.
This colourful airline has been a lifeline to the isolated Isle of Man for a long time – ever since British Midland stopped their services to IOM.
They have used:
Embraer Bandeirante, Fokker F27, Saab 340, Vickers Viscount, Shorts 330 and 360, Jetstream 31, Jetstream 41, BAE ATP, BAC 1-11 and BAE 146-100 and 200.
I am going to upload pictures of all these aircraft types – some today and some tomorrow.

RE: Pic of the moment – Manx Airlines
Window seat is the worst. I’m not especially tall (5 foot 11) but I always get a crick in my neck. Because of the curvature of the fuselage you cannot hold your head straight. That might also be down leg room, because with tight leg room you tend to sit more upright.
Not sure about seat pitch though. For some reason, BA give less legroom on long flights than on short ones. Their 747 fleet has 31 inches, and this 146 felt tighter than the 747 was.
Maybe franchised 146’s are configured differently to mainline RJ’s.

RE: Pic of the moment – Manx Airlines
According to this month’s Highlife, BA’s Avro RJ’s have 32″ pitch.
DOn’t think I’ve ever been on an ARJ with a 3×2 layout…
I’ve flown on Crossair and Sabena (or rather, dat) RJ’s but they were both 3×3.
Don’t like the 3×2 config on the MD-80… that‘s tight… don’t remember any problems on the RJ, except that when the row was full (which granted only happened the once) it was a bit tight (especially when, as a Prop forward, you’re in the middle seat).

About 31 inches seat pitch with Manx. Not terrific. At least in 2*3 it was okay, but not 3*3.

I love the Bae 146 too. About configuration, the LH avros with 2X” were simply great. Air UK 3X3 was simply terrible and Debonair 3X3 but generous pitch was OK.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-07-02 AT 11:01 AM (GMT)]Oh, one last tribute…
Manx had some great registrations:
G-OMAN
G-OJET
G-ISLE
G-LEGS
G-HOPP
G-MIMA
G-MANC
G-MANU
Last two were for the sake of impartiality, obviously!

RE: Pic of the moment – Manx Airlines
1. The IOM-specific inflight magazine is gradually being substituted for some bland tosh about tofu, yoga and high Montreal fashion (ie. BA’s Highlife).
2. Comfort levels have been decreased.
3. On the good side, Manx’s ridiculous frequent flyer scheme has been abolished. You had to present five ticket stubs to join, but they had to be “full fare”. Full fare meant £300 for a 30 minute stretch to MAN or £320 to LHR. “Cheap” meant £120 instead. I can now collect BA Miles instead, which is a definite improvement.
4. Also an imrpoement is that fares are coming down. I have paid £75 rtn to LGW on my last few trips, a definite improvement on £320 even if the seats are now painful.
5. We were getting BA mainline A319’s for a week or so recently when the 146 was in the shop. Much better flights. I wonder if we will replace the ancient 146 with any of BA’s shiny new A318’s when they aere finally delivered?. When there was a maintainance period, the old Manx used to fob us off on EAC 737-200’s.
Anyway..last installment.

The 3-3 configuration is horrible,I agree.I find that with British European, everybody seems crammed and there is not much arm space. The BA RJ 100s are the same.
How much has the service changed on services to/from the IOM since Manx was absorbed into BA?

“Now that is my favourite all time airliner. Forget the DC-10 and the 767-300, the BAE 146 is without a doubt the finest aircraft in the skies. I’ve just got to actually fly on one and back up my opinion!”
The problem with the 146 is that there are two seating confugurations used by airlines; 3-2 or 3-3 abreast. Manx Airlines always used 3-2 and it was fairly comfy. However when BA bought them, they suddenly reverted to 3-3. This configuration is horrible!
Anyway, more pics!

Thanks guys. I never went on the 1-11, Bandeirante or F27, I’ve been lucky enough to fly on the rest though.
