GASCO – Flight Safety Extra have just published a major change to the requirements for pilot medicals.
The CAA have announced that the possession of a DVLA Group 1 Ordinary Driving Licence will, for UK and NPPL licence holders be evidence of medical sufficiency.
The arrangements for a Medical Declaration will continue as an option.

The CAA have just announced a confirmation for this medical changeover. The new system comes into being late summer, 2016. Possession of a valid GB driving licence will form the new medical.

My NPPL renewal medical with my GP used to cost a couple of pints of Greene King IPA at the Rose and Crown and a chat about the state of English test cricket. The new owners of the partnership have upped it a bit to £30 but that’s still better than up to £200 for a Class 2, which I wouldn’t get anyway.

Take your point about the health indications but, for those with slightly less disposable income it is a bit of a blessing. According to those I’ve spoken to, around our area – Hampshire/Sussax/Surrey – the average price of a Class 2 including ECG is about £250.

As one who’s life was saved by a casual remark from my AME I think I’ll steer clear of the consultation.
For the hundred or so quid it costs (less than a month’s hangar rental) I consider it value. But no reason why it should be imposed on others with different views.

If it is in the consultative stage then let’s consult. I’ve e-mailed my comment applauding a far sighted and very practical, hopefully evidence based change, that offers considerable savings for British licence holders.

Yes that seems to be about the size of it. Would be nice if it happens though.

My reading is that at this stage its a consulation which closes on the 10th July 2015 rather than an announcement of a change.

Very true John. Agree about the thinking behind it. I’m sure I read something about that being the way it’s done in the US, or similar anyway. Anything that helpss us afford to remain current has to be a help in staying safe.

Mike,
As far as I am aware, the original announcement made no mention of a date. The assumption must be that this new provision is current.
The thinking must be that, anyone unable to hold a Medical Declaration will be unable to drive anyway and therefore the two systems complement each other.
I think that the CAA are to be thanked for what appears tobe a piece of evidence based commonsense. It is not unusual to hear of Class 2s costing £250 per visit. This can be a burden to those struggling to maintain adequate currency.

Does anyone know when this becomes effective?
