Okay, I know this has been done a hundred times or more, but I figured what the heck. We might even have some new members here. Tell us what your favorite jet airliner is and outline some reasons you like. It has to be in current service somewhere. Only pick on though, as hard as it may be for some of us.
My all-time favorite jet airliner is one I’ve never even been on ironically. I guess I’m a bit too young. It would have to be the Boeing 707 for me. The 707-320 if you want to get picky. I love it for many reasons. First of all, it is elegant. The 707 has to be the most beautiful airliner I’ve ever seen when it comes to grace of lines and such. I don’t think even the Concorde has it beat when it comes to this. Secondly, it ushered in the era of jet travel as we know it today. Who would’ve guessed that the Model 367-80 (popularly known as the Dash 80) would lead to the most successful family of jetliners to date. In fact, the 707 itself was so successful that Boeing retained many of its design features in later airliners, including the exact same nose profile on the 727 and 737 (just compare pictures of the three and you’ll notice the nose is identical). Also, the same fuselage size was used for the 707, 727, 737, and 757. The 707 also introduced more fuel-efficient turbofans with the advent of the JT3D engine. This engine is fairly fuel efficient even by today’s standards and is the reason for the impressive range of both the 707 and the USAF’s B-52 Stratofortress. Also, I love the 707 for the success it has had. Tons of military and civil operaters have used it over the years and to my knowledge it hasn’t let very many people down. Fortunately, even though it’s old, we will still see them for years to come at least in the military if not commercially, which I’ll admit 707’s have gotten rather rare. I don’t expect you to choose the 707 as your favorite, but I do hope you realize what a wonderful airplane it is and has been.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
Sounds like I hit a nerve there SOC.
Anyway, just be careful of the way you word things as that was how it came out to me initially.
Another question for you all. Who in here prefers four-engined jetliners (707, 747, A340, etc.), three-engined (DC-10, 727, L-1011, etc.), or twin-engined liners (757, 777, A320, etc.)?
Personally I prefer the four-engined liners, such as the BAe ARJ series, Boeing 707, Airbus A340, DC-8, etc.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
Phantom-I didn’t say that they caused it to crash on purpose, merely that they did cause it to crash. There is a difference. If I am shooting rockets into the air where I know an aircraft is flying, but I’m not aiming at the aircraft, and I happen to hit it and make it crash, then I caused the crash, albeit not on purpose.
If you want clarification on what happened in 1973, and why the Concorde was technically inferior in some aspects, feel free to e-mail me. I will refrain from posting in your threads.

My fav has to be the 744 closely followed by the A340.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
yes…the B777 is great, i did DEL-SIN on an SIA B777 and it was a great flight, it is one of the most comfortable aircrafts. But part of my flight was the power of the RR Trents, the power of the A330 is not even comparable to the B777, seeing that they both are of the same league.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
My fav jet is the Boeing 777, I sat in the flightdeck from LHR-JFK, and I tell you what, what an aircraft, the power of the engines, the size of the flightdeck (Not cramped at all) the electronics and so on.
The only slight disappointment is that as much as the pilots fly the aircraft they don’t really FLY the aircraft, They punch in the route, speed, height and everything else and the plane can almost fly itself.
Compared when I have sat in for landing’s in a boeing 737-200 where on landing there’s no little computer telling you where you are and the route you are going to take on landing, they fly the route by VOR and compass bearing’s!!, I hope this makes sense!
But The 777, well what can I say, gracefull, big, powerfull, and I’ll tell you what the captain told me alot of stories of what boeing originally wanted to design compared to what’s built now!

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
I saw a very interesting French TV program on Tupolev’s crash.
The end story was that the Concorde had problems flying while the Tupolev didn’t and so the French wanted to have a closer look at the Tupolev during flight time.
This is what they sent a spy Mirage. Obviously they were not gonna tell the Soviets “Hey we’re sending a Mirage to take spy shots of your plane”.
Unfortunately the Mirage got to close, the rest has been said here.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
Okay, so we have votes for the following:
Boeing 707
Boeing 747
Boeing 757
Boeing 767
DC-10/MD-11
DC-9
Airbus A330
Interesting choice of planes here. SOC, I think you are a bit too harsh on the Concorde and on the French in general. Saying they purposely caused the Tu-144 to crash is rather uncalled for. People died there, so don’t say things like that. It was just unfortunate circumstances. And no, I won’t debate you on it, so don’t get all bent ouf of shape. Just don’t make rude comments like that on my threads.

DC-9, specifically the short fuselage versions such as the -10 and -15. No particular reason, other than that I used them a lot as a kid and they were sleek, quiet and powerful.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
Without a doubt it has to be the 767-300, it is just such a fine aircraft to look at and travel on. I do not like the -200 series nor the -400, but the -300 is absolutely brilliant!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-07-02 AT 07:25Â PM (GMT)]MD-11/DC-10, get to see the cargo versions operated by Gemini Air Cargo up at East Midlands quite frequently, in fact there was a DC-10-30F on the DHL ramp this afternoon.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
They didn’t cause it as in they planted a bomb or anything, it was more like they influenced the circumstances. Here’s what happened: Concorde flew immediately before the Tu-144. The French then cut the Tu-144’s display time in half, right before the flight. They also had an unauthorized Mirage flying above the airfield to take pictures (read: spy) of the canards on the Tu-144 and how they operated. The flight crew of the Tupolev had no idea the Mirage was in the area. They already had to deal with a constrained display, and when they pulled into a climb, went through the clouds, and saw a Mirage right in front of them, they knew if they continued climbing they would collide with it. So, the pilot threw the Tu-144 into a dive, which overstressed the aircraft and caused the engines to flame out, and it crashed.
Ergo, the French were directly responsible. Had they not sent up the Mirage, none of this would have happened. Who in their right mind sends up an unannounced aircraft into airspace where aircraft are conducting flying displays? Apparently, the French, thanks to their desire to beat the Soviets at all costs in the SST market. Bah. They were still sore that the Tu-144 got into the air first }>
Ayway thats what happened. And there was never any technical fault found in the Tu-144.

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
VERY difficult to pick just one, I have been on so many types and liked them all, not to mention my favourites for photographic reasons, but here goes. I will go with the Boeing 747-400, looks great from the side, superb take off, advanced flight deck and simnply unbeatable comfort if you’re lucky enough to be in an exit row, like I was on a 14 1/2 hour flight once. The only other 747 type I’ve flown on was the “100”, but I was only five at the time and don’t remember much about it.

Has to be the DC8 especially the stretched 61 and 63 series.
Was lucky enough to fly on two of Worldways aircraft in 1990.

It has to be the A330. Simply – its curves, demeanor and overall generall appearance. I love the ‘downstairs loos’ in the cabins too. I much prefer the A330 to the B777!

RE: Your Favorite Jet Airliner
The 707 is still used by Sudan, Ghana and some other countries and is still used as a freighter by many airlines. Small and new cargo airlines mostly prefer the B707 as a starter.
