Last friday when I flew Virgin Blue from Sydney to Melbourne. I had a 6:30 a.m. flight. When I got to the airport at 5:50, the cue extended outside the terminal. We were informed that their entire computer system was down. When the system eventually came back on, our flight was delayed about 40 minutes, as were some of the other flights that morning I would imagine. As long as I don’t have a tight connection, delays of that length do not bother me, no biggie. Last night I received an email, signed by the CEO of Virgin Blue, apologizing for any convenience I might have incurred due to the delay of the flight. I was in utter shock. This sort of apology letter was definite a first timer for me. A very nice gesture from a young airline, indeed.

RE: How many airlines do this?
nothing to do with Virgin…but i was supposed to be on a flight to HK, it was when UA used to come here with there around the world flight. The flight was around 7 hours late, even we got a sorry letter from UA for our inconvinience. I think all major airlines mst be following this.

RE: How many airlines do this?
Virgin are good at that sort of thing.
I was flying EWR-LHR with them about 2 years ago. I had boarded the aircraft and was in my seat, when another passenger asked if I was in the wrong seat. The staff had checked two people in to the same seat. Even though there was an empty seat next to me, they actually upgraded me to Upper Class rather than shift this chap one seat along!
I was dressed well though, whereas the other chap looked like he was homeless!
I suppose it doesn’t alter their costs to do this; it actually engenders a propensity to re-book with them, so I’d say such behaviour is good business sense. Shame other airlines don’t agree!

RE: How many airlines do this?
I don’t know of many airlines which do that, but on all delayed Virgin flights you do recieve an apology letter. When my flight to Barbados was delayed 4 hours we recieved a letter saying how sorry they were, they also offered us a 10% discount on our next Virgin flight.
