Anyone know what the memorial at Blackbushe is for?

It’s a private memorial by the cross roads junction just by the edge of the airfield.
Could be just for a car accident victim but it’s a little more substantial. Makes me wonder if it’s a private memorial to
an aviator?

Easier to see when enlarged! If that truck can park there, I am sure you can for five minutes………………….

Thanks for the replies.
That white post looks like an old distance marker.
It isn’t an official memorial. It’s a private memorial but a little more substantial than the usual bunch of flowers for a car crash victim.

Not very easy to make out. See the yellow flowers in the bushes.
I need to find a place to stop to take some photo’s.
Like I say it could be a car crash victim but it’s well maintained. Quite a large memorial and away from the kerb. The sort of place a plane might crash.

On the subject of memorials are there any in Hartney Wintney? Several military jets crashed there in the 50’s.

Having nothing better to do this morning, I went onto Google-Earth and via Street View, the only thing I could find that might be mistaken for a memorial, was an old Mile Stone. Could that be it?

Charlie,

I think the memorial plaque in your link is sited on the airfield itself (i.e. within current boundaries), whereas the memorial mentioned by hampden98 is situated just outside the (current) airfield limits…. possibly near one of the crossroads where minor roads cross the main A30 to west or east of the current airfield boundaries?

But I may well be wrong! :apologetic:

hampden98 – I have just chcked, and can find no mention of the memorial you describe on ‘Airfield Information Exchange’ (aka ‘AIX’) webpages, so I suspect it may not be avaiation related, as AIX is fairly comprehensive…but of course, it is always possible AIX members have missed one or two memorials along the way…

I remember the accident well – living not that far away at the time and being a frequent visitor. I think this will be it – a second’s Googling did the trick!!

Here’s a slightly educated guess: Shortly after the end of WW2, a chap – I think he was a Pole by origin and ex RAF – started a commercial airline from Blackbushe. His operation was at the start of foreign package holidays from this country.

One of the aircraft he was operating; either a Vickers Varsity/Valletta or Viking on departure, crashed into the woods lying to the south east alongside the A30. I believe all on board were killed. The memorial you mention might be connected with that event.
