More years a go than I care to remember I did a weeks work experience with British Midland, as it was known then, at East Midlands Airport, I worked with a guy who was an engine fitter/mechanic and really enjoyed getting to grips with the engines of a DC-9-30, needless to say I did not perform any major tasks for obvious safety reasons, but I did become proficient in the art of wire-locking nuts and bolts! I also spent a day working on the ramp and got to sit in the cockpit of, and take part in an engine test on a Fokker F-27, although only in an observatory capacity, has anyone else done anything similar, I’d love to read about it if you have, and just for good measure here’s a pic of a DC-9-30 in the colour scheme of the time.

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
Hey, I didn’t know that!!!!! A BBJ?? WOW!!!! The guy who owns Multi had a Citation V or something like that… then he bought the Falcon 900… to take him on holiday… then he decided to charter the Falcon out… I think it’s still used by Sir Frank Williams… and so he gets it whenever he needs it… ALWAYS!! Anyway, once Multi’s boss wanted to go on holiday… when a Grand Prix was on… so he was forced to take the Citation… What a comedown!!!!

Ah, N76TH… sounds familiar!! That was one hell of a nice helicopter!!! Not as nice as G-MLTI the Falcon 900B though!! I saw a Citation X around aswell… and I know that Multi wanted one. Is that theirs?

EC-135 G-BXXV has been and gone – it was sold to S. Africa and when was owned by Multi flown from Cullingworth. The S76 i think u are referring to is G-MLTY which is actually an AS365 Dauphin II which is still there.

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
After applying to well over 15 companys for my work experience last year, including Leeds Bradford and Multiflight, I ended up at Newcastle Airport.
I spent one week with FLS Aerospace and the second week with British Airways Engineering.
My time with both companies was fantastic. With FLS we did the line checks on AIH’s based A320 (G-RDVE) and various other visiting A320s and A330s. We also covered JMC’s based B757 (G-FCLD). Obviously I was not qualified or old enough to perform some of the more detailed tasks but, such things as checking oil levels and performing walk around inspections was a daily occurence for me.
With BA it was a similar thing (except the onboard crew perfom their own walk arounds etc…) Basically checking with the Flight deck for any problems. I worked on various B737s, A319s and A320s all the LHR shuttles. I also got the oppertunity to sample how often Brymons Dash 8s brake down!
I also spent an afternoon with ATC in Radar and the cab…fantastic.
Best two weeks I’ve had so far!
Regards
Ben

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
Yeah, I’ve heard of those!!! And I’ve had a good look round G-DRAR too! I didn’t know one of Multi’s R22’s crashed though!! Do you know if Multi’s Sikorsky 76 is still around? I know they were on about selling it… but whether they did or not I don’t know! And another thing… Multi were supposed to be getting one of the first Eurocopter EC-135’s off the production line… any ideas if or when that will arrive?

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
A long time ago…
I spent 2 weeks work experience at BAE Systems at their Brough factory. The work involved fairly safe things, like stamping out the metal plates which carry the a/c serial number. I did get to spend some time in the air intakes and in the cockpit though, which was neat.
At the end, the company took us up for half an hour in their corporate Jetstream 31.
A very nice company for the most part, but some of the workers were union fanatics and made very unreasonable demands…it seemed to be a running sore point.

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
In 1998 I did 2 weeks work experience with Multiflight at Leeds/Bradford. For people not familiar with Multiflight, they operate a flying school and charter out some biz jets. They have a Falcon 900B, the one used by Sir Frank Williams the Formula 1 team boss. They also do engineering work on aircraft for a number of customers.
Because of my age, I couldn’t do much. I found myself taking panels off aircraft for inspection.. and then putting them back on. I didn’t mind it… I was around aircraft. 🙂
While I was there, a British Aiways BAe Jetstream 41 landed with a cracked windscreen… so Multiflight had to fix it… and so one of the engineers took me onboard… we found where the sweets for take off were… and helped ourselves to a few of them. 🙂
The company were in a bit of a quiet spell… so I ended up watching a bit of the World Cup… which was nice!!

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
Nice pic, I used to fly on BD quite alot between LPL and LHR. The normal aircraft they used was the DC9-15. However that was then and they dont fly from here anymore. I must say I liked the livery they had previous to the one you have in your picture, although I also like the latest one as well. Seems a shame they can’t say British Midland Airways (BMA) anymore, think they are forgetting their routes a little.

RE: Work Experience with British Midland
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-06-02 AT 06:53Â PM (GMT)]During my last semester in college, I got hired on by UPS to work at their nearby Ontario(ONT) hub, which is their biggest other than their main Louisville, KY hub. I was a peak hire during the busy Christmas season, and was laid off at the end of December. This was ok, considering I had received my diploma and was ready to start my carear, anyhow. Needless to say, it was the best job I’ve had to date, even though it only lasted a month. I would come in at 2 a.m.(to the lovely smell of Jet-A!), and get off at 7 a.m. Then, I’d take an hour to get some breakfast, and go back from 8 till noon, or so. I worked on a crew where our primary duty was unloading the main decks of the narrowbodies. I mostly worked on the 727-100, 757-200PF, and the DC-8-71/73. However, during the 2nd portion of the doubleshift, I got to unload the 747’s as well. We would pull the cans(A-2’s or L-9’s) forward to the cargo door, and push them onto the K-loader; and vice versa on the load. My favorite was the DC-8. Sometimes, a couple of us would just kick it in the cockpit while we were waiting. It was great!
