“Shire” means County. Hence Devonshire means the County of Devon but you can’t say the County of Devonshire because it wouldn’t make sense to repeat the fact that it is a County twice.

Ah well ,I only arrived in Plymouth in 77 so a bit of a “johnny come lately”!!As for fracking sites I would think that’s more a seismic thing rather than mapping. What happened to the scare about radioactive granite that was around years ago?

That’s what I was taught too. Also the Devonshire regiment at some stage amalgamated with the Dorset regiment to become the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment as it said on their cap badge even though everyone called them the Devon and Dorsets.

Hello,WL745,

Yes it is a borderline thing.
As most of the flights track was over Devonshire with the southern most points over Cornwall.

I will continue to use Devonshire because that is what I was taught when I went to school.
Also there is a Duke & Duchess of Devonshire and there used to be the Devonshire Regiment.

I have no idea if it can be done from the air but my thoughts turned to searching for new Fracking sites, I think the area although small is similar to that in South Wales which is already targeted ?

All the best from Sunny Cornwall
