Cairns set to become a gateway to Australia.

QANTAS is set to start flying international flights from Cairns A/P, this will reduce international flight prices by around 35% and will also save on fuel for the Qantas fleet.

Firstly step will be to upgrade the A/P to handel heavies and international tourists. The flights will start around 2004 giving some indictaion as to how much upgrading is needed to facilitate these changes!

Should be interesting to see the effects of this venture on the local ecconomy and in turn on the Australian ecconomy.

Cairns already handles heavies so not much upgrade needed for 767-300s

Agreed – prices to Australia are ridiculous, sometimes even being the same as a Club ticket LHR-JFK.

Not sure using Cairns will reduce prices per se, not unless it will be a part of Qantas strategy to compete with other carriers.
