Does anyone have any pictures of the Airbus A-340? Wait a minute… not just any A-340 pictures!! Today I had a lecture by someone from the Royal Aeronautial Society. He said something about the A-340…
During the testing phase, the A-340’s wingtip would vibrate… like it was under flutter… but randomly!! This was caused by a vortex coming from the outer engine pylons. It was cured by placing a subtle, but noticeable bulge under the wing near these engines.
Does anyone have any pictures of this?
Oh, by the way, this cure was only used on the early A-340’s, the later ones had re-designed engine pylons to cure the problem.

RE: A-340 pics
Thanks Kabir! The slide the guy showed us wasn’t exactly the most clear thing in the world, so I just wanted to see exactly what they did!
This problem was found 4 months into the test phase. For all civil aircraft, it is expected that the aircraft will go into production for commercial use 9 months after the first flight. This random flutter problem gave Airbus quite a fright when it was discovered because they effectively only had 5 months to cure it!!
