At all airfields?

With the growing need for green energy why couldn’t solar panels be fitted on to the roofs of the many hundreds of aircraft hangars throughout the country?

I live beside Boscombe Down and see the lights on site on for most of each day yet with approx 32,000 metres square of roof space available (measured using Google Earth) covering only 50% of this would generate considerable amounts of energy for the national grid.

Could it be a distraction for some pilots and or dangerous with possible reflecting light on approach?

I think the Blue Angels for example are partly guided by a member of the team holding a mirror on the ground (reflecting the light) to help guide them back to the airfield or guide the display area. As well as using ground ‘marks’ such as hedges, roads, or even a field that looks a bit different from other fields.

Oh with a feed in tariff and enough time, it would make a handy income for any airfield. Plus when the sun shines, the panels reflecting in the sun would make a handy visual beacon for any approaching pilot.

Many large span building are quite sensitive to weight on the roof. So by the time you’ve done an engineering survey to see if it’s strong enough, then beefed up as required it may not be worth it.
Great idea though, all new houses should have then fitted I think.
