Birmingham Airport Developments

If you ask me, we need more regional airport news on this forum. Don’t let me take over with all my BHX news, let us know whats going on at your local airport too….

BHX news…

American – Are resuming their daily BHX-ORD service from 2nd April using the B767-300. Was suspended last October due to the terror attacks on the US.

British Airways – The 8 A319’s will soon be gone, and BA Citiexpress will be based at BHX and MAN using 16 ex Gatwick based RJ100 aircraft. 12 are expected to be based at BHX. It is not known how many job cuts will be experienced at BHX. Most A319 flights out of BHX will see usually 50-90 PAX aboard, so the RJ100 will be better suited to the airport.

Continental – Load factors have been at around 86% during February on the carriers daily flight to Newark, NJ. Type used is B757.

CSA – Are introducing a 6th weekly service from BHX to Prague from June. The aicraft used wil be the B737-500, though the -400 is used from time to time. Loads have been really good on this young service so far.

Emirates – Their daily A330 service to Dubai is doing really well, and 85% load factors were the norm during February. Most flights are opearted by High Density config A330-200s, though low density machines are seen from time to time. Tuesday is the traditional ‘low load’ day.

Uzbekistan – Will start a 3rd weekly B757 flight to Tashkent shortly.

SAS – Doing well on the 3x daily Copehagen route – a 4th rotation is expected soon.

Maersk Air UK – All B737-500’s will be replaced with new CRJ-700’s – Two of the latter have so far been delivered.

Royal Jordanian have made it known that they wish to commence 2/3 flights per week to Amman from April/May, using a mix of A310 and A320 aircraft. Plus, PIA are set to return with twice weekly A310’s from the 31st March.

Most terminal expansion plans have been put on hold, and it is not known when they will get the green light. Luckily, the market conditions seem to be improving so it may not be that far away.

RE: Turkey-A new GO destination

Yes they were taken at the back of the Tristar.
I used to go there a lot until they put up the second fence!
Now someone has bent the top bit of the fence so I can get my camera through the hole again :-).

Keep a look out for me, I’ll probably be there a bit through the summer if we get some nice weather!

RE: Turkey-A new GO destination

Dan330 – Nice photographs! I know that spot where they were taken – at the back of the Tristar hotel? I live at the spot during the summer! Those new Dash 8’s are loooooooong.

Keltic – This is indeed more good news regarding BCN. I imagine the a/c type used on this route will be the RJ100. The existing flights from Biringham to both BCN and MAD do quite well – I’d like to see more Spanish cities added though.

I hear British European are set to introduce a daily flight from Birmingham to Milan – I bet BA won’t be happy about this! They are also looking at adding a 7th daily frequency from Birmingham to Edinburgh from 3rd June.

I think I speak for us all when I say that things have looked bleak in the world of civil aviation during the past six months. I’m really pleased that things are picking up again. Stored aircaft are returning to service, and the airlines are recruiting staff again. Things are looking up at last.

RE: Turkey-A new GO destination

Good to hear the news about Birmingham (and Jersey / Guernsey of course). Should be some interesting stuff in this year, I’ve got a good photo spot at Birmingham to get some nice pictures.

RE: More C.I. news

Good to hear Jersey is doing well…
I’ve just read the passenger figures for the first half of March passing through Birmingham – We’re up 2% on this time last year! This is excellent news, and is the first increase in passengers since September. Emirates daily A330 service to Dubai is doing really well – 85% average load factors. Continental’s daily 757 to Newark has a 92% average load factor! The BHX summer timetable indicates this service will be operated by B767-200 as well. With this upgrade and the return of American on April 2nd, Birmingham is getting back to it’s pre September 11th norm.

More C.I. news

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-03-02 AT 06:25 PM (GMT)]Sorryto keep bringing up this topic but I don’t think it deserves a new one and it is also giving some info that could be of interest to someone.
So here is some more news from here in the C.I:
There is suggestions that IOS Skybus will operate a Plymouth-Guernsey-Jersey service with a Twin Otter after Brymon pulled out of the route.

Because of the movement of the RJ100’s from Gatwick to Manchester and Birmingham, the JER-LGW service will be changed from an RJ100 to a 737!(One good thing to come out of the BA cutbacks in my opinion)GCI still gets the crummy ATR72.

There is talk of a new airline (probably Transavia)operating the Jersey-Amsterdam route. At the moment passenger who want to the delights of Amsterdam :7 have to go via GCI with Aurigny.

Aurigny will not operate the Guernsey-Bristol service which they had been granted by the GTA (Guernsey transport authority)They say they want to concentrate on more there current services.

British European are operating charers on behalf of a local travel company to Palma with a 146.

Jersey’s multi-millon pound new taxiway will open next saturday. The taxiway is now able to take any aircraft up to the size of a 757.Great views of the aircraft from the roadside are visable to now!

Jersey airport has a new website: http://www.Jersey-airport.com
It rivals mine which is set up on Geocities, mine is now being turned in to a channel island aviation news site (its rubbish): http://fly.to/egjj

RE: Regional Airports

No, I wouldn’t laugh at a small airport. Size doesn’t count – it’s what you do with it (or so I’m told!!)

RE: Regional Airports

I can’t say, because the one where I live is constantly busy. It may be small and some of you may laugh, but it is a very busy airport.

RE: Regional Airports

I used to live near Humberside airport…

That was truly dead. When I lived there, Air UK flew twice a day to AMS using F27’s.

Sometimes in the UK, authorities build regional airports in the middle of nowhere then get upset when no one uses them! Does the same thing happen elsewhere, anyone know?

Regional Airports

I live in Mississippi, in the U.S. and the airport where I live is not nearly as big as most of the ones you guys are talking about. There is only one airline here as of now. Mesaba (Northwest Airlink) operates the Saab 340B from here to Memphis International in Tennessee. I believe there are three flights from and then three flights to here each day. There used be be four, but Mesaba had to cut back after the attacks in September. Since then though, the number of passengers has risen so four flights may again be put into use. The airport management is actively seeking another airline to replace American Eagle and later MESA, which both flew to Nashville, TN. American Eagle and MESA have both been gone for several years so Mesaba has been the only airline here for a while. However, as I said the management is actively seeking another airline. One of the offers is for a regional jet service to Cincinatti. I’m not sure of the airline. In addition, Northwest might possibly begin to fly the Canadair CRJ out of here. That is many many years down the road. Truth be told I will miss the Saab’s so maybe it won’t be for a while. The control tower was opened up on January 25th. Formerly, there was just a small control tower, that wasn’t even reallya the full deal. The need for the new tower arose and the new airport management put it into fruition and go us the tower. The tower is necessary because traffic in and out of here (combined with the Army Guard unit that flies OH-58D’s) has really picked up. I believe it has quadrupled in the last several years. So, you may laugh because our airport is so small here, but I just thought I’d mention it because it is indeed a regional airport. Interestingly enough, we get a lot of interesting visitors here (helicopters and unusual light planes and such as well as various military aircraft and helicopters from time to time….The USAF even uses this airport for training purposes with their T-37, T-38, and sometimes T-1 aircraft coming in every few days….another reason for the tower). There is even a big air show planned for April and the Blue Angels will be the main attraction.

RE: Stansted-Bradley (Connecticut)

ICI always used to use charter aircraft for their communications.

I can remember King Airs at Teesside very often, and the occassional BAE 125. I’d be surprised if there is still much activity as their Billingham plant has been downsized for a couple of years now.

RE: Stansted-Bradley (Connecticut)

Not many services from Teesside but they were always fairly frequent though. Doesn’t hurt that Tony Blair uses it a fair bit!

I’ve only ever been from there to the IOM, LHR and AMS though – so you may well be right. Tip – if you fly there from LHR you quite often see some footballers – I once sat the row behind Juninho on a F100 from LHR.

RE: Stansted-Bradley (Connecticut)

Great news about the IOM-Toon service, especially if like me you’re a Boro supporter in exile! Manx Airlines used to fly to Teesside several years ago on a S360 but dropped it due to bad load factors.

Hopefully as part of a network rather, than as a p2p route in its own right the new service will continue.
