TU 156

Any idea what happened to the Russian TU 156 project? It was supposed to be the first aircraft to enter service powered by LNG….but never heard what happened after that.

Also would you think an LNG run engine would be efficient, safe and populor??

RE: TU 156

Cheaper agreed, but will airlines gamble with safety. Even if Russians got out the TU 156 mostly Russian airlines will only buy it. No western airline will gamble with such a thing in my opinion. Maybe those like Cubana etc. who maybe forced to take this technology in, as these will be very cheap.

RE: TU 156

As far as I can gather no progress had been made by the end of 2000. The Tu-156 was apparently to be made available in several versions. The Tu-156S with NK-89 turbofans running on kerosene/LNG, this been a conversion of the Tu-154B. The Tu-156M, a similar conversion from the Tu-154M, and the Tu-156M2 with NK-94s operating on LNG only.

I am not sure about effeciency but they would be cheaper to run on LNG.

Regards, Glenn.
