The media always seem to blow these things out of all proportion.
Both jets had the TCAS system, so there was never going to be a collision.
The media like to hype it up and make a big story out of nothing.

Having spoken to a first officer at Qantas who was pilot flying one of those 747-400s says there was never any chance of the aircraft coliding,The colision alarms sounded at 17 km seperation or about 1 min fro impact so my guess is they had plenty of time to to company measures.A 747-400 travels about 17 km per minute so dont blow it out of preportion,I have seen much worse than that.
