Birthday

Today is a double birthday for the boeing 747.

Firstly, 33 years ago 747-100 (N7470) first flew on a flight which lasted 1:16.

And, 13 years ago, the 744 (N661US) made its first commercial service with Northwest Airlines.

RE: Birthday

I’m sorry this info has taken so long, I’ve been checking through my Comet books.
XS235 was the last airworthy Comet (a 4C model). It ended its career at Boscombe Down in the 1990s, and took part in Heathrow’s 50th anniversary flypast in 1996. Apparently there have been plans to get it certified from the CAA for civil flying (although without passengers) and re-register it with a registration similar to the Comet 4 which flew the first trans-Atlantic turbojet passenger flight back in 1958. If this plan was successful, the Comet would be flown to Johannesburg on 2nd May 2002 to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

RE: Birthday

Does anyone know about the Centenary of aviation celebrations in Kittyhawk?

I heard something and wonder if it will be worth going to it next year?

RE: Birthday

Wasn’t there an ex RAF Comet that was going to be refurbished and made airworthy that was stored at Bruntingthorpe – i seen to remember something about it in the old Air Action – whatever happened to them they disappeared after about 4 issues!

RE: Birthday

I suppose the ultimate aviation “birthday” this year is that of the passenger jet. On 2nd May 2002, it will be 50 years to the day since the first passenger jet service, when the Comet G-ALYP flew from London to Johannesburg. I think that is something to celebrate, even if I am biased!!!
