Transporting Animals

Does anyone have any experience, and information about transporting dogs by plane? I am hoping to move abroad possibly next year and I need to know which airports and airlines in the UK are best for animals. I would have thought Manchester or Heathrow, and possibly British Airways (the dog will be flying to Brussels), but that’s mainly because of programmes I’ve seen on TV (“Airport” with the animal centre at Heathrow).

RE: Transporting Animals

Last year, I won a WWF essay contest about the environmental impact of aviation. The prize was to visit LHR to have a look round. I’ve seen where Jeremy used to work!! I also got the opportunity to look round the animal reception centre. The guy from the TV programme still works there!! It was great… quite a few obscure animals were there… I got to hold a Python which was cool!!!!

RE: Transporting Animals

Thanks for your replies, very helpful. Well, at least I’ve fulfilled one condition already, the dog is microchipped, and I’ll see the vet about sedation, my dog is a little excitable, putting it mildly. At the moment, BA are my number one choice, I checked out with them and they are really informative and seem really good. I need to see the vet about rabies and stuff as well.
As for Jeremy, I met him last time I was at Heathrow!! I got a copy of his book as a Christmas present and I took it to Heathrow to see if I could see him and get it signed. We asked at Aeroflot’s desk, and then at information, who phoned to the Aeroflot office and asked if he would sign the book. He actually invited us (me and my Mum) up to the Aeroflot office where he spoke to us and my Mum took his photo. He signed the book and we also met the Aeroflot engineer Igor. It was really a super experience, and he came across as a really nice guy. I was disappointed when I heard he no longer worked for Aeroflot (I think he single-handedly improved their passenger numbers between LHR and Russia). I wonder what he does now because he is never on TV anymore.:-)

RE: Transporting Animals

The best place for advice to start with is your vet as they can tell you all the conditions your dog will have to satisfy to be able to travel. Microchipping is essential, whether your dog travels abroad or not. If s/he ever gets lost all police stations, vets and dog wardens have access to scanners to notify you of their whereabouts. Some form of sedation is almost certainly necessary.

As for the actual airline, your best bet is to check with each airline what they offer. I’d also check with the RSPCA to see if they have any suggestions.

Hope this is all useful.

Regards,

Kev.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-01-02 AT 07:08 PM (GMT)]Yes that guy who works for Aeroflot is hillarious, unfortunately he quit Aeroflot to start his television carear, although i really don’t think that it was that succesful. The funny thing is that Jermey is married which i found quite funny….
Anyway good luck with the move in the future Comet!

RE: Transporting Animals

I’ve also seen that documentary on TV here in Belgium, very interesting (especially that guy working for Aeroflot was really hilarious :+)

But i don’t think a dog would cause any trouble. Make sure you first visit your vet, because the dog can get upset and nervous. Maybe he’ll give the dog something to relax.

One suggestion : do not travel with Korean Airways if you want to see him back :+

I would go for Heathrow and BA. Remember to get the microchip pput into your dog so it can skip past the 6 mts Quanrantine. I think the chip is around £130+

RE: Transporting Animals

The best to do would be to ask them directly.
