[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-01-02 AT 07:14 PM (GMT)]As a result of the end of production of the BAe 146/Avro RJ in November,British European Airways lost its orders for the RJX which had been ordered to replace BE’s older BAe 146’s which have been the backbone of the airlines fleet since the early 90’s.The RJX,which had extra range and the ability to land on short runways had been chosen by BE after talks with companies such as Airbus,Boeing and Embraer, but unfortunately due to the end of production of the aircraft all orders were cancelled. So now what aircraft would be suitable for them to operate, maybe the ERJ-170/190,A318/A319 or the 737?
I would think the ERJ-170/190 as the aircraft have similar capacity as the 146’s and they will be able to land on smaller runways. What aircraft do you think would be best for them to operate?

RE: Which Aircraft would be best for BEA?
ATR’s are made in France and they keep crashing in icing conditions, I wouldn’t use one to replace a flightless chicken.

RE: Which Aircraft would be best for BEA?
The ATR wouldn’t really be needed for British Europeans fleet as their first 78 Dash 8-Q400s are coming into service very soon which have near enougth the same seating capacity as the ATR 72.

The ATR is not a solution, it seats around 70 i think……the ERJ 170 or even 190 can be a good choice, or they can go for the Do328JET??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-01-02 AT 09:43 AM (GMT)]Andrewm, the CRJ ‘s are leaving BE’s fleet sometime in the next year or so because they have had a lot of problems with there maintance and there are not many routes in which the CRJ can be used and so they will be replaced by Dash 8-400.

Maybe they will oder some more Bombardier CRJ’s as they do a some already on the fleet, and when I pass Belfast City Airport you can always see a CRJ parked in the end ramp!

P.S No-one ne should take in what ‘GillAirways’ has to say as I he is just making things up as I only had to research ‘GillAirways’ for a event my flying club is doing with Belfast City Airport and we had to research all the old airlines that flew out of Belfas City and the current ones.

How about the ATR72, I know it’s a prop, but what sort of capacity does it have?

I would suspect the Embraer, too.
Certainly, when Crossair were looking to replace their Avros, they came to the conclusion that the A318 wasn’t viable, unless part of an A320 family, as their are too many downsides in the scale of it. I think the 737-900 can be put in the same category.
Of course, they could go with Lufthansa, who’re getting Canadair RJ’s to replace their Avros.
I suppose it really depends on how integrated they are to Air France. AF have got the 320 family, maybe BE could gwt AF to maintain a fleet of 318’s, but I doubt it.

I’d like to see tham operate thae Airbus A318 / 19, but its difficult to know which they will go for as their other attempt at Jets, the CRJ’s were not a success and are being removed after a very short service. The Embraers would probably be the most likely candidate, but if they went for Airbus they could benefit from fleet commonality in future if they decided to expand and offer destinations further afield.
