A sad day for us all. I remember that day clearly and I don’t think we’ll ever forget it either.

LAST EDITED ON 19-09-01 AT 05:23 PM (GMT)[p]After the terrorist attacks there have been a few other reports of hoax bomb scares on planes,a VLM Fokker 50 from Jersey to London City was forced to make an emergancy landing at LCY after it was reported by a phone call to LCY that there was a bomb onboard. The airport was closed and the plane landed shortly afterwards with no bomb on board. How many more of these bomb hoaxs will there be?

RE: passenger plane( that is what they say) hits world trade center.
Other men of an arabic appearance have been arrested by airport security at ever Logan or Newark airports. The men were found to be carrying small knives in there jackets. It shows that there are many others out there ready to take down more aircraft and kill many many more.Thank god they were found out!
Some airline duty free sell pen knives, was this sensible?i am sure they will be withdrawn now.

RE: passenger plane( that is what they say) hits world trade center.
The twice I’ve flown transcontinental flights in the states they’ve’s both times been full. 4 years ago, I flew PIT-SFO with US Airways, and SFO-EWR with United. Both were 757s.
As to these particular flights being relatively empty, the departures were all around 8am local time, due to arrive in California around 11am local time. From that point of view, I wouldn’t have expected them to be particularly full of business passengers, who, I think would be more likely to travel after work, say 6-7pm, and get in around 9-10pm.
Smaller aircraft (than the 757) don’t have the range. These flights are all some 2500-3000 miles.

RE: passenger plane( that is what they say) hits world trade center.
United and AA’s domestic fleets are dominated by 757’s and 767’s. Delta’s, as well. They use these for many routes, short and long. It’s not uncommon for the first flight out on such a busy route(BOS-LAX) to be a 767. In fact, United’s first flight is a 767 and the rest are 757’s. AA’s, UA’s, and Delta’s JFK-LAX flights are exclusively operated with 3 class 767’s. So no, this is not uncommon at all. It’s surprising on how ’empty’ all these flights were, however. Anytime I’ve flown on any of these busy routes within the U.S., they’re usually pretty packed unless they’re late at night(not including redeyes). It certainly is good that they weren’t, however.

No Shaun, the Dulles flight was going to L.A. as well. Only the Newark flight was going to SFO. This has been confirmed many times over, trust me.

Among this tragic event, I was thankful that the airliners were not full of passengers. Is it common practice to use such large aircraft to carry so few passengers? Was it an off-peak time?

RE: passenger plane( that is what they say) hits world trade center.
Ok, few months ago the Americans raised there voice to get the security checks down on domestic flights. So the government did, know i think they paid the price. After the closure of all airports United did operate 5 flights to fly special forces in NY and Washington.

Affects in the UK
Well as has been said LCY is closed and there are no overflies of london.Security has been stepped up in all UK airports.Alderney airport here in the channel islands for the first time ever had baggage screening and passengers were searched. All flights from JER to LCY are cancelled. In Jersey all inter island passengers have been switched from the Aurigny terminal to the main terminal so that they can go through security. No one seems to mind as everyone is as shocked and sad by the scenes on the news.
No word yet when US flights will restart, yesterday after a meeting in London Air canada and AA started to check people in as they thought flights would resume but they were stopped. The first flights are now leaving Canada.
There is an air show over here in Guernsey and Jersey, most of us thought it would be cancelled as a sign as respect but no it is on.Many US aircraft such as the B-52 have been cancelled but the red arrows, ect are on.I am looking forward to seeing the AIH 757 fly past with the red arrows!it is a magnificant sight but it will be over shadowed this year by this tragic avent.

RE: Security?
i’m staying out of these discussions but my friend who is in the cadet over here (uk) that there is a thing called a kevlar knife. you must bear in mind that just after clinton got in to power he got al gore to head up a major scurity check of airline seurity – the result international security is now world standard, but the internal airlines didn’t want it – well lookie now. i supose i better point out about ceramic guns, etc.

I think they carried them through and they were not searched,at least thats what it said on the news. All comes down to the security at american airports. They were also armed with shaving razors.

Security?
Hang on a minute…I just heard the hijackers were armed with knives.
Sorry to start the questions at this early stage…but how did they get knives onto the aircraft? Aren’t they made of lots of metal? Doesn’t metal set off metal detectors and show up nicely on X-ray machines?
For one to get through is a security lapse, for enough to hijack four aircraft to get through suggests that there was no security at all…

RE: The blackest day for aviation ever
No,just heard that they are not opening yet on the news.It is not understood now when they will open.Just heard this sad sad story about a man working on top of 1 of the towers. He rang his wife and said goodbye as he saw the plane heading straight towards him,he knew he didn’t have a hope in hell.
By: Saab 2000 - 12th September 2001 at 16:56
The blackest day for aviation ever
The US FAA is preparing to reopen America’s airspace to civil planes at 1600 GMT on Wednesday.
an estimated 4,000 commercial aircraft have been grounded in the US about a 3rd of the worlds fleet.
United and AA are not restarting flights yet but special permission has been granted to fly the families of those dead to new york, pittsburgh and Washigton.Alaska Airlines and Horizon have said they were preparing to restart a reduced service at operating at a quarter of their normal daily departures, while America West Airlines and Southwest Airlines hoped to begin very soon.Delta has cancelled all flights until 2200 GMT.Very limited services are being ran.Its going to take a long time to get US aviation back to normal.
And after what has been called “the blackest day aviation has ever had,” the industry is facing severe financial consequences.
Yesterday’s events will have a catastrophic effect on world aviation.Airports around the world are already filled to bursting with stranded passengers after flights to the US were halted or diverted on Tuesday. British Airways flights to Canada, the US, Israel and Islamabad and Pakistan are cancelled.A return to normality is expected to be a lengthy process, due to the need for extremely tight security measures and the lack of space for airplanes on the ground. And even once airports do reopen, high security of a kind unfamiliar to most US domestic air travellers is likely to become very normal.
STEPPING UP THE SECURITY:
Security has been stepped up at Heathrow which normally has 68 scheduled flights a day to the US.
the UK government banned all commercial air traffic from flying over the capital, London, as did Belgian authorities with planes due to pass above Brussels.Airspace in Israel has remained closed.Even Easyjet has been forced to cancel flights because of the sheer volume of people at airports.
WATCHING THE PICTURES:
This morning when i woke up and turned on the television.Watching the pictures from the different angles of the planes smashing into the buildings was just so unbelievable, how could this happen? What it must of been like for these people is unthinkable. The terrorists forced them to phone their families, how are you supposed to tell your families that your plane is hurtling into the WTC and is going to kill thousands?God help those people.
http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1540000/1540…
There are some very sad and emotional reports from the families of those who died about what their loved ones said.
Once again i want to say may god help all those involved, may they find those involved and kill them as that is the least that they deserve.
