FGS Oker/A53 a Type 423 Oste class SIGINT/ELINT/Reconnaissance ship of the German Navy, spent the weekend moored alongside HMS Belfast which just happened to be weekend of the 75th anniversary of the infamous Channel Dash made by the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen to beat the British blockade sailing from Brest into the Channel and back to Germany. Co-incidence?. Monday afternoon and Oker was due to leave at 2 o’clock with the arrival at 1.30pm of the Svitzer tugs Brunel and Madeline with the Brunel traveling upstream backwards although it was traveling downstream forwards as it towed the Oker backwards under Tower Bridge. The Oker was still going backwards as it disappeared around the river bend towards Canary Wharf where when river width permitted it would be spun around to travel under its own steam or diesel fumes in this case.
