What I think?

Hi there,
I want to tell you what I think about the ugliest aircraft is, I think it is the Boeing 777, it is horrible, like that stupid nose and those landing gear, YUK!. I would also like to remind everyone that they are entitled to an opinion!!!
A beautiful aircraft, well made by boeing, is the Boeing 757:7 , but it’s bigger brother the Boeing 767 is horrible!!!
The best aircraft cockpit has to be the B737, and the 757/767, they are basically the same anyway.
Airbus, well I don’t like the A340 much, but love the A300, A310, A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, although I am a bit sceptical about the A380.
But the best lookinbg aircraft has to be concorde
Then the 757
Then the DC-10-30
See ya

RE: Tridents…….

The main reason that they were retired early was the noise/pollution issues of the late 80’s. They also were’nt as economic as the 73/757’s which were then being brought in, but then again I can’t see why a BAC 1-11 with two Speys and a lower capacity was more economic (?). The Trident was the first aircraft in the world which could ‘autoland’ and did so in thick fog at LHR for the first time in the 1960’s. I would venture to say that the Trident was far more advanced than the B727 and I am sure that to re-engine Tridents with JT8D-15’S or similar would’nt have been beyone the realms of impossibility. The last Trident flight was on 31/12 1986, the day before new EC noise/Pollution controls came into place. A premature end for a great aircraft I think. I am glad to see the BAC 1-11 is still soldiering on although for how long, I don’t know. I can’t really see why a lot of 707’s are’nt still in service really as some of the USAF KC-135’S have now been in service for 40+ years with no problems. A civil 707 with CFM-86’S…. how about that?:)

RE: What I think?

I totally agree that the Trident was retired too early. They may have not sold very well outside the UK, but I tell you, these aircraft were more comfortable than the 737 and similar types. The cabin was quieter than the 737-100/200 as the engines were at the rear, and the fueslage was actually a little wider too. I find it strange that aircraft from the same era, such as the superb BAC (or Bae) 1-11 are still in service, whilst most Tridents has the chop in the mid to late eighties. The 3B in particular was a good aircraft, with exceptional performance. Remember the little booster engine it had?

What about the BAC 1-11 475 series?? This has the short fueslage of the 200/300/400 models, but also had the larger span of the -500 variant coupled with uprated RR Spey powerplants. These were designed for hot ‘n’ high conditions and could climb out of gravel airstrips like rockets. Why did it sell so poorly? Strange world if you ask me.

RE: What I think?

Hi there,
I know I am only 13, but the old planes are the best. I mean, taking a ride from Heathrow to Johanaburg, o whatever in a B707, that would be a ride, not in a plush A340.
And the americans, wanting Pilot-less aircraft, don’t be so stupid, there will always be a pilot. I don’t really like the way Boeing is going(it ryhmes), the B757(Classic), B767-200/300, and the 737-300,400,and 500, they have cockpits, analogues gauges, witha hint of technology, like the EFIS screens and that. Yes the Trident was a really good aircraft, so was the
BAC 1-11, I think the best aircraft produced by Airbus has to be the A300, A310. What about the A318, it will look like it was a A319 smashed into the factory wall.
See Ya,
Remember, the Old ones were the best!

I wouldn’t say there are Ugly aircraft, just ones that aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as others.

Tridents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

LAST EDITED ON 09-04-01 AT 07:29 PM (GMT)[p]Yeah, I reckon the DC-8 is a good looker too! I like the air scoops under the chin… make it look like it means business. DHL have just retired theirs recently….. shame.

My favourite though has to be the Trident. Yet another world beater, inadequately marketed by British government/industry. It was (in my opinion) retired far too early and could have been retrofitted with a Spey hushkit without great expense. It breaks my heart to see G-AVMP (?) on Manchester’s fire dump (been there since 1981) everytime I go there. When I flew to Luton recently, I glimpsed a fuselage of an airliner in the fire dump. It did’nt look like a Trident though…… any ideas???

Oh yeah and the Chinese retired their Tridents back in 1992, the last one going into service in 1972. There should have been more life left in them surely??? Shame.

Paul.

RE: What I think?

Well, Iam not telling anything since I totally agree V1. There are reallu ugly planes. The TU-334, the C212, the Shorts, all stretched versions…and so on. And for ugly ones of the militar ones.

RE: What I think?

I have been looking quite a bit at my older aviation photographs recently, dating back throughout the 1980s. Rather than list which aircraft is ugly (no such thing), I’m going to list the aircraft which are rarely seen in service (if at all) and they are the ones I truly miss:

1. Bae 1-11
2. DH Trident
3. Vickers VC10
4. Douglas DC-8 (Loved the longer versions)
5. B707
6. Dassualt Mercure 100 (OK, only 11 built and Air Inter was the only customer, but they looked good)
7. B727

OK, some of the above types remain in service, but I rarely see them. All (in my opinion) are true classics and paved the way for the common types we see today. I’ll be adding the TriStar to that list soon too..

RE: What I think?

It’s alright mate! 🙂 Don’t worry! Say what you want to. I will NEVER take offence. It’s good to see someone who is so young, have an opinion. You keep it up young man. Aviation is a great thing to be interested in and I certainly would welcome any opinons you have! (Sorry for being a bit condescending, I don’t mean to be:) )

RE: What I think?

Well AIrbus, you said that you think the 777 is ugly, specially its nose and landing gear are YUK!!!(as said by you). And know you say you only said about the nose of the 777, tose were your words Matthew, and they clearly indicate that you are saying that the whole 777 is ugly. And i think you havent experienced the 777 in flight, after you will, I am sure you will forget about its appearence. And one more point, everyone makes mistake , no one is perfect, so i suggest you may like to stop pointing out mistakes people make, make use of the info and data they give insted pointing out errors. Its perfectly right if you point out mistakes like the spelling of Qantas , many people first spell it as Quantas, so we have to correct that. and that Got It!! on your post was a little annoying, so i advise you to not do it again, this is a forum where people exchange openions, news and views. SO enjoy that.

regards
Kabir

RE: What I think?

LAST EDITED ON 06-04-01 AT 04:14 PM (GMT)[p]Well thank-you, I would like to add something to my statement, I think the WORST is airline is JMC, I am saying that with disgust. They are the worst airline I have ever flown with, and that food is awful, the stewerdesses I think are going through the menopause or something!!! I will NEVER fly with them again!!! I musrt urge everyone not to fly with them. Fly with someone like Air 2000, or Monarch, I mean even Airtours is better than them. And the guys and gals at EasyJet have nothing to smile at either, although the check-ins people are all right, but the lads at check-ins seem to me like p**fs, I do not mean to offend anyone. Yes, the An-124 and that are nice airliners, they are built to last. I don’t like the name RJ, or RJX, I like BAe 146-xxx better.
And another thing, do you think that the appearence matters? Like I have this thing, that I look at the Airline, and get a couple of thier pic of thier aircraft, the wheels can’t be black all over except for the RUBBER, and I don’t like to see marks, and dents in the aircraft either. And on the Boeing 737 BBJ, the winglets are awful, what is that a plane ora sea-gull or something, it’s awful.
I think it was a littlw while ago that someone said that boeing were built to last, I have seen about 14 Boeings under going maintainence at one time, due to things like fuel tanks, and A/C packs, etc, and if you notice that it is mostly Boeings that are the late flights. Airbus require maintainence just like any other airliner, but come on boeing.
Sorry if you got bored

RE: What I think?

Like you say, it is a matter of personal taste. I was watching a documentary on Discovery Wings last night which was about Russian transport aircraft, the last 15 minutes was all about the AN-124 and AN-225. Although they are not airliners, these huge transports are the most graceful aircraft I have ever witnessed. Shame only one AN-225 was produced, but there are a few 124’s flying about all over the world.
