Concorde – Whats the story?

Does anybody have any info on when Concorde will be likely to enter service again? Things seem to have gone a bit quiet and I am itching to see our beloved supersonic bird back in the skies. I have also heard rumours that BA may buy the Air France fleet. I am sceptical about this, but can anyone shed any light?

Regards,
V1

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

Are you sure the new Boeing will travel above the speed of sound? The Boeing web site states its speed as “mach .95 or higher” which doesn’t exactly make a clear indication of the actual speed. The part about knocking 1 hour for every 3,000 miles is definately correct, again the source of this was the Boeing web site ([link:www.boeing.com/news/feature/concept/photo.html|see here]).
Also if the aircraft does fly above the speed of sound won’t it be limited to flying over oceans or seas?

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

Yeah, but all the Boeing gig is all on paper. Europe did it in the 60’s. The Wright brothers may be the first to fly, but we were the first to send people wholesale supersonic! Boeing are’nt really brave enough to do it! Forget your ‘artists impressions’ and hypersonic bullshit, we have the real deal and have had so since 1969!!!!!!! How about that Boeing?

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

Some wrong info dan:). the 20XX is going to travel above the speed of sound, Mach 2 i dont know, but deffinately abve speed of sound. the 777-300 already travels on Mach 0.95. It was said in an Airline catalogue i get. Mr Mullaly, CEO Boeing said this himself. As i have said before, Boeing has chosen speed over size, so if they make a jet lookin a little diffrent but not doing speed, it makes no diffrence.

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

The new Boeing 20XX will not have the speed of Concorde, it will not be that fast. Concorde travels at mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) while the new Boeing aircraft will travel at mach 0.95 which is obviously just below the speed of sound. As the normal aircraft today already fly between mach 0.80 and 0.87 then there really won’t be that much difference. I heard that they are aiming to knock about 1 hour off for each 3,000 miles so London New York will be about 6 hours instead of 7, but still a long way behind Concorde’s 3 hours.

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

I agree with Keltic. We must look to build a new Concorde. And i think Boeing is already workin on it. They are right know calling it Boeing 20XX. Its going to be the size of the B767 with the speed of concorde.

Good Year? Nothing to with BA, then… They use Dunlop. AF do use Good Year, though.

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

LAST EDITED ON 05-04-01 AT 10:32 PM (GMT)[p]Yeah, but what’s happening? Last I heard was that a Concorde was undergoing taxi tests in southern France and that Goodyear have almost perfected the new tyre, but since then……nothing! I hope that all goes well and she goes back into service. I think she will but lets just be patient. I would be surprised if BA bought the Air France fleet as there is’nt really a market for so many supersonic aircraft with one airline surely? (unless the price is going to be dropped – you’ll have to beat me off with a sh#tty stick if that’s the case! 🙂 )

Paul.

P.S: Do we have any national pride? I thought that went years ago….

RE: Concorde – Whats the story?

Well, I bet for Concorde. VIPS have got used to it and don´t have any alternative in the market to cross the Atlantic. Powerfull people get what they want. I suppose they leave huge amounts of money and I suppose BA doesn´t want to lose them. Taking into account that Boeing is studying faster planes, the most intelligent thing to do is developing the new Concorde. It´s a question of national pride as well.
