I saw an article in last weeks Mirror ( I think) which was going on about “how antiquated the VC10 is”. Is it true that they can no longer use LHR as the nav aids on board are incompatible? I saw one at Manchester airport a year or so ago, so is this true or is it the usual ill-informed tabloid pap?

Only the Victor K2’s. They have all gone to St Athan for reduction to spares. They tried to keep one at Brize Norton for the gate but the top brass were’nt having any of it apparently…

Nah mate! Not ALL of the VC10’s have gone. Only some variants. I heard that the VC10 will stay in service for a few years yet although I suppose the spares situation must be getting difficult now. Then again the RAF do have a a habit of improvising and ‘getting their moneys worth’ out of airframes! I hope it lats for a bit longer as it’s a great plane in my opinion…………….. whaddayareckon guys??????

I do not know about the nav aids been incompatable. But if the RAF transports still fly goverment people round the world do they now have to travel to and from Brize Norton and can they only land at certain airports around the world which use older landing systems. I once saw two in one day at Manchester on troop movements two or three years ago.
