Were we expecting a dramatic change in so few years? (Sci Fi Films)

When I was a kid we had shows like Space 1999. Shows set in the `oh so distant future`.
I’ve just been watching Soylent Green which is set in 1999 and makes reference to 2015,2018.

Isn’t it amazing that in the 70’s these years were thought to be so `Futuristic`.
Now we have reached or past these milestones not much has changed. Sci Fi movies now are set in 2150 or farther into the future.

So did we expect major changes in so few years and have we now excepted these changes are going to take a lot, lot longer?
