A needle in a haystack

Obviously it is unkind to add insult to injury, but the chance of hitting a house in that area seems like that of finding a needle in a haystack. As a friend put it rather succinctly – “it would have been better if he had just closed his eyes!”

Plexiglass windows on top are a mod and not very common.

I was test flying a tripacer at Rand Airport (FAGM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rand_Airport once with 2 maintenance engineers on board. On downwind, something went pop(we couldn’t figure out what) and the plane would not maintain height. Lucky we were in the circuit and so I just kept it tight and we landed ok. It turned out to be the plexiglass window on top which popped out of its retaining strip and acted more or less like a spoiler. There was a mod out for a larger retaining strip which hadn’t been carried out at that point. This was back in the 80s so I imagine the same mod would have been carried out on the aircraft above, but who knows.

How unlucky is that! What is it with Popham and the PA22 Caribbean/Tri-Pacer? They say that bad things go in threes and this is the third time in the last few years that the Popham Flying Group has had one written-off, having previously lost first G-ARCC and then its replacement G-ARHP.

Nasty for the occupants but let’s hope they are soon on the way to a full recovery.

I still do fly one. Comforting how tough they seem. Most crew seem to walk away (Possibly because they hit things so slowly) though these two weren’t so fortunate.

My late great uncle used to fly a PA22 and I still have his logbook. I wish the couple a speedy recovery, sorry that things went wrong for them.
