Worlds longest route??

Hello,
Soon United Airlines will be starting a non-stop flight from Chicago to New Delhi. Do you think this flight will be successful? Will people take a non-stop 16 hour 30 minute flight. In my openion no. Please advice.

Thanks
Kabir

RE: Worlds longest route??

Hi Kabir,

I don’t think its so much the duration of the flight, but more so the demand for the route.I am a travel agent in Durban and our flight from Jo’Burg to New York is 17 hours and the daily flight is usually full.So I think the question will be,is there a big enough demand for the route !

Thanks
Lance

Ps:I must say,the longer the flight the happier I am,there more time spent on an aircraft the better !

I just had a thought (that’s this year done then) – do you people out there think that the increase in no-stop flights will lead to more cases of ‘Air-rage’? Are the seats wider apart on these long-rangers and can you play footie in the galley? I would go mad! How are the airlines going to make it more bareable?

RE: Worlds longest route??

When I was young, I had one of those American books on civilian airliners (A4 format, lots of pictures) and I recall one feature of a BA(?) 747 flying from LHR to Narita (?) JP. It said the voyage took 22 hours with 2 (?) stop offs. I don’t know if they still do it though! I know this is not non-stop but I thought it relevant to the subject…

RE: Worlds longest route??

That reminds me of the time I lived in Seoul in the laste Seventies: also a rapidly growing number of people climbing into the income bracket that enabled them to purchase an air ticket for the first time. Same situation on board. Adding to the difficulty was that most people failed to appreciate that lavatories were in fact lockable… The most original anecdote is that of a Korean grandmother who placed herself and her oversized hand luggage in front of the exit door just after descent towards Kennedy and refused to move. After all, in provicial buses, you don’t get on OR off if you don’t make a dash for the exit…

RE: Worlds longest route??

please amend last line of last posting to read
….to other long haul destinations.

And before anyone asks, the airlines report far greater numbers of infants, airsick passengers and carry on food on sub continent routes (both India and Pakistan) than other long hauls and a greater number of first time pax per flight.

RE: Worlds longest route??

No doubt United have thoroughly researched the market for this route and expect to pick up both business and ethnic travel traffic.

All long haul flights can be boring. It will be interesting to see which aircraft the airline uses as most European airlines flying to the sub-continent tend to use older members of the fleet as experience shows the economy cabin is often in a pretty delapidated state on arrival compared to other European destinations.

RE: Worlds longest route??

I agree with Matthew. There are already several routes that take 13 and 14 hours and if I could fly Delhi/Chicago nonstop then I would. As long as the aircraft has inflight entertainment, a laptop socket and an extra inch of seat pitch then OK. Maybe the airline will offer a book voucher with every boarding pass… and install those self-clean lavs! Johno

RE: Worlds longest route??

Hello again!
What difference will it make? LAX-SYD is 14:40 – and often heavily booked – and those 2 more hours aren’t that much worse. By the fifth hour you’ll most likely be bored stiff anyway… Two things surprise me though. First, will there be a market for this flight? And second, will they make the cabin crew go into the lavatories at regular intervalsto keep them clean. If they don’t then we’re all in for a har time. Just look at the state of the lavs at the and of a transatlantic haul and let me know if you can come up with something more disgusting…

Keep flying!
Matthew
