Recognition Guides

I normally hang out on Historic, so I am OK when a plane has a proper engine, and I am not too bad on modern military. However, when it comes to twin engine jets with swept wings, I don’t know my Boeing from my Airbus and know even less about modern light planes.

Which is a bit of a problem as No1 son wants to do his scouts aircraft recognition badge which tends to focus, rather too heavily in my view, on modern civil airliners and light aircraft at the expense of Spitfires and Vildebeests

So does anyone have any suggestion for good modern recognition guides which cover at least civil jets? I have looked at the latest Janes Recognition Guide and do not find it helpful. The pictures are small and it is really no more than a list, it is not organised by reference to recognition features, so you need to have an idea what something is before you can look it up.

Thanks

Paul

The cockpit windows are a giveaway. On the pilots side windows, Airbus cuts away the top aft corner, Boeing the bottom aft corner.
Another giveaway are the wing end plates on A320 series planes.

Or you can cheat a bit. Know which airlines fly which jets.
True, some fly both makes, but few fly the same basic size of jets from both makers…i.e. 737 and A320 or 767 and A330.

Can’t blame them… Vildebeests aren’t so common these days

You might want to check this. There aren’t so many different airliners flying, anyway 😉
